Fussilat

Explained in Detail

فصلت

Responds to a Makkan chief's cynical attempt to bargain with the Prophet by ignoring his terms entirely, affirming instead that the Quran is a revelation whose truth does not depend on any worldly motive.

أَكْثَرُهُمْmost of them
فَهُمْso they
لَا(do) not
يَسْمَعُونَhear
4

As a giver of good tidings and a warner; but most of them turn away, so they do not hear.

5
وَقَالُوا۟And they say
قُلُوبُنَاOur hearts
فِىٓ(are) in
أَكِنَّةٍۢcoverings
مِّمَّاfrom what
تَدْعُونَآyou call us
إِلَيْهِto it
وَفِىٓand in
ءَاذَانِنَاour ears
وَقْرٌۭ(is) deafness
وَمِنۢ بَيْنِنَاand between us
وَبَيْنِكَand between you
حِجَابٌۭ(is) a screen
فَٱعْمَلْSo work
إِنَّنَاindeed, we
عَـٰمِلُونَ(are) working
5

And they say, "Our hearts are within coverings [i.e., screened] from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you is a partition, so work; indeed, we are working."

6
قُلْSay
إِنَّمَآOnly
أَنَا۠I am
بَشَرٌۭa man
مِّثْلُكُمْlike you
يُوحَىٰٓit is revealed
إِلَىَّto me
أَنَّمَآthat
إِلَـٰهُكُمْyour god
إِلَـٰهٌۭ(is) God
وَٰحِدٌۭOne
فَٱسْتَقِيمُوٓا۟so take a Straight Path
إِلَيْهِto Him
وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوهُ ۗand ask His forgiveness
وَوَيْلٌۭAnd woe
لِّلْمُشْرِكِينَto the polytheists
6

Say, [O Muḥammad], "I am only a man like you to whom it has been revealed that your god is but one God; so take a straight course to Him and seek His forgiveness." And woe to those who associate others with Allāh

7
ٱلَّذِينَThose who
لَا(do) not
يُؤْتُونَgive
ٱلزَّكَوٰةَthe zakah
وَهُمand they
بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِin the Hereafter
هُمْthey
كَـٰفِرُونَ(are) disbelievers
7

Those who do not give zakāh, and in the Hereafter they are disbelievers.

8
إِنَّIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ءَامَنُوا۟believe
وَعَمِلُوا۟and do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deeds
لَهُمْfor them
أَجْرٌ(is) a reward
غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍۢnever ending
8

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds - for them is a reward uninterrupted.

9
۞Say
قُلْDo you indeed
أَئِنَّكُمْ[surely] disbelieve
لَتَكْفُرُونَin the One Who
بِٱلَّذِىcreated
خَلَقَthe earth
ٱلْأَرْضَin
فِىtwo periods
يَوْمَيْنِand you set up
وَتَجْعَلُونَwith Him
لَهُۥٓrivals
أَندَادًا‌ۚ ذَٲلِكَThat
رَبُّ(is the) Lord
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ(of) the worlds
٩

Say, "Do you indeed disbelieve in He who created the earth in two days and attribute to Him equals? That is the Lord of the worlds."

10
وَجَعَلَAnd He placed
فِيهَاtherein
رَوَٰسِىَfirmly-set mountains
مِن فَوْقِهَاabove it
وَبَـٰرَكَand He blessed
فِيهَاtherein
وَقَدَّرَand determined
فِيهَآtherein
أَقْوَٰتَهَاits sustenance
فِىٓin
أَرْبَعَةِfour
أَيَّامٍۢperiods
سَوَآءًۭequal
لِّلسَّآئِلِينَfor those who ask
10

And He placed on it [i.e., the earth] firmly set mountains over its surface, and He blessed it and determined therein its [creatures'] sustenance in four days without distinction - for [the information of] those who ask.

11
ثُمَّThen
ٱسْتَوَىٰٓHe directed (Himself)
إِلَىtowards
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe heaven
وَهِىَwhile it (was)
دُخَانٌۭsmoke
فَقَالَand He said
لَهَاto it
وَلِلْأَرْضِand to the earth
ٱئْتِيَاCome both of you
طَوْعًاwillingly
أَوْor
كَرْهًۭاunwillingly
قَالَتَآThey both said
أَتَيْنَاWe come
طَآئِعِينَwillingly
11

Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly."

12
فَقَضَىٰهُنَّThen He completed them
سَبْعَ(as) seven
سَمَـٰوَاتٍۢheavens
فِىin
يَوْمَيْنِtwo periods
وَأَوْحَىٰand He revealed
فِىin
كُلِّeach
سَمَآءٍheaven
أَمْرَهَا ۚits affair
وَزَيَّنَّاAnd We adorned
ٱلسَّمَآءَthe heaven
ٱلدُّنْيَا[the world]
بِمَصَـٰبِيحَwith lamps
وَحِفْظًۭا ۚand (to) guard
ذَٰلِكَThat
تَقْدِيرُ(is the) Decree
ٱلْعَزِيزِ(of) the All-Mighty
ٱلْعَلِيمِthe All-Knower
12

And He completed them as seven heavens within two days and inspired [i.e., made known] in each heaven its command. And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars, for beauty] and as protection. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

13
فَإِنْBut if
أَعْرَضُوا۟they turn away
فَقُلْthen say
أَنذَرْتُكُمْI have warned you
صَـٰعِقَةًۭ(of) a thunderbolt
مِّثْلَlike
صَـٰعِقَةِ(the) thunderbolt
عَادٍۢ(of) Aad
وَثَمُودَand Thamud
13

But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] ʿAad and Thamūd.

14
إِذْWhen
جَآءَتْهُمُcame to them
ٱلرُّسُلُthe Messengers
مِنۢ بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْfrom before them
وَمِنْand from
خَلْفِهِمْbehind them
أَلَّا(saying) "Do not
تَعْبُدُوٓا۟worship
إِلَّاexcept
ٱللَّهَ ۖAllah
قَالُوا۟They said
لَوْIf
شَآءَ(had) willed
رَبُّنَاour Lord
لَأَنزَلَsurely, He (would have) sent down
مَلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭAngels
فَإِنَّاSo indeed, we
بِمَآin what
أُرْسِلْتُمyou have been sent
بِهِۦwith
كَـٰفِرُونَ(are) disbelievers
14

[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allāh." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."

15
فَأَمَّاThen as for
عَادٌۭAad
فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟they were arrogant
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe land
بِغَيْرِwithout
ٱلْحَقِّ[the] right
وَقَالُوا۟and they said
مَنْWho
أَشَدُّ(is) mightier
مِنَّاthan us
قُوَّةً ۖ(in) strength
أَوَلَمْDo not
يَرَوْا۟they see
أَنَّthat
ٱللَّهَAllah
ٱلَّذِىthe One Who
خَلَقَهُمْcreated them
هُوَHe
أَشَدُّ(is) Mightier
مِنْهُمْthan them
قُوَّةًۭ ۖ(in) strength
وَكَانُوا۟But they used to
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاin Our Signs
يَجْحَدُونَdeny
15

As for ʿAad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allāh who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.

16
فَأَرْسَلْنَاSo We sent
عَلَيْهِمْupon them
رِيحًۭاa wind
صَرْصَرًۭاfurious
فِىٓin
أَيَّامٍۢ(the) days
نَّحِسَاتٍۢ(of) misfortune
لِّنُذِيقَهُمْthat We may make them taste
عَذَابَ(the) punishment
ٱلْخِزْىِ(of) disgrace
فِىin
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِthe life
ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ(of) the world
وَلَعَذَابُAnd surely, (the) punishment
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ(of) the Hereafter
أَخْزَىٰ ۖ(is) more disgracing
وَهُمْand they
لَا يُنصَرُونَwill not be helped
16

So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.

17
وَأَمَّاAnd as for
ثَمُودُThamud
فَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمْWe guided them
فَٱسْتَحَبُّواْbut they preferred
ٱلْعَمَىٰ[the] blindness
عَلَىover
ٱلْهُدَىٰthe guidance
فَأَخَذَتْهُمْso seized them
صَـٰعِقَةُa thunderbolt
ٱلْعَذَابِ(of) the punishment
ٱلْهُونِhumiliating
بِمَاfor what
كَانُواْthey used to
يَكْسِبُونَearn
١٧

And as for Thamūd, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn.

18
وَنَجَّيْنَاAnd We saved
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ءَامَنُواْbelieved
وَكَانُواْand used to
يَتَّقُونَfear (Allah)
١٨

And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allāh.

19
وَيَوْمَAnd (the) Day
يُحْشَرُwill be gathered
أَعْدَآءُ(the) enemies
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah
إِلَىto
ٱلنَّارِthe Fire
فَهُمْthen they
يُوزَعُونَwill be assembled in rows
١٩

And [mention, O Muḥammad], the Day when the enemies of Allāh will be gathered to the Fire while they are [driven], assembled in rows,

20
حَتَّىٰٓUntil
إِذَاwhen
مَاthey come to it
جَآءُوهَا(will) testify
شَهِدَagainst them
عَلَيْهِمْtheir hearing
سَمْعُهُمْand their sight
وَأَبْصَـٰرُهُمْand their skins
وَجُلُودُهُم بِمَا(as) to what
كَانُواْthey used to
يَعْمَلُونَdo
٢٠

Until, when they reach it, their hearing and their eyes and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do.

21
وَقَالُوا۟And they will say
لِجُلُودِهِمْto their skins
لِمَWhy do
شَهِدتُّمْyou testify
عَلَيْنَا ۖagainst us
قَالُوٓا۟They will say
أَنطَقَنَا ٱللَّهُAllah made us speak
ٱلَّذِىٓthe One Who
أَنطَقَmakes speak
كُلَّevery
شَىْءٍۢthing
وَهُوَand He
خَلَقَكُمْcreated you
أَوَّلَ(the) first
مَرَّةٍۢtime
وَإِلَيْهِand to Him
تُرْجَعُونَyou will be returned
21

And they will say to their skins, "Why have you testified against us?" They will say, "We were made to speak by Allāh, who has made everything speak; and He created you the first time, and to Him you are returned.

22
وَمَاAnd not
كُنتُمْyou were
تَسْتَتِرُونَcovering yourselves
أَنlest
يَشْهَدَtestify
عَلَيْكُمْagainst you
سَمْعُكُمْyour hearing
وَلَآand not
أَبْصَـٰرُكُمْyour sight
وَلَاand not
جُلُودُكُمْyour skins
وَلَـٰكِنbut
ظَنَنتُمْyou assumed
أَنَّthat
ٱللَّهَAllah
لَا(does) not
يَعْلَمُknow
كَثِيرًۭاmuch
مِّمَّاof what
تَعْمَلُونَyou do
22

And you were not covering [i.e., protecting] yourselves, lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins, but you assumed that Allāh does not know much of what you do.

23
وَذَٰلِكُمْAnd that
ظَنُّكُمُ(was) your assumption
ٱلَّذِىwhich
ظَنَنتُمyou assumed
بِرَبِّكُمْabout your Lord
أَرْدَىٰكُمْIt has ruined you
فَأَصْبَحْتُمand you have become
مِّنَof
ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَthe losers
23

And that was your assumption which you assumed about your Lord. It has brought you to ruin, and you have become among the losers."

24
فَإِنThen if
يَصْبِرُوا۟they endure
فَٱلنَّارُthe Fire
مَثْوًۭى(is) an abode
لَّهُمْ ۖfor them
وَإِنand if
يَسْتَعْتِبُوا۟they ask for favor
فَمَاthen not
هُمthey
مِّنَ(will be) of
ٱلْمُعْتَبِينَthose who receive favor
24

So [even] if they are patient, the Fire is a residence for them; and if they ask to appease [Allāh], they will not be of those who are allowed to appease.

25
۞And We have destined
وَقَيَّضْنَاfor them
لَهُمْcompanions
قُرَنَآءَ(who) made fair-seeming
فَزَيَّنُواْto them
لَهُم مَّاwhat
بَيْنَ(was) before them
أَيْدِيهِمْand what
وَمَا(was) behind them
خَلْفَهُمْand (is) justified
وَحَقَّagainst them
عَلَيْهِمُthe Word
ٱلْقَوْلُamong
فِىٓnations
أُمَمٍ قَدْ(that have) passed away
خَلَتْbefore them
مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّنَof
ٱلْجِنِّthe jinn
وَٱلْإِنسِ‌ۖand the men
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, they
كَانُواْwere
خَـٰسِرِينَlosers
٢٥

And We appointed for them companions who made attractive to them what was before them and what was behind them [of sin], and the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect upon them among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.
