بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
ٱلَّذِينَThose who
كَفَرُواْdisbelieve
وَصَدُّواْand turn away
عَن سَبِيلِfrom
ٱللَّهِ(the) way of Allah
أَضَلَّHe will cause to be lost
أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْtheir deeds
١

Those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allāh - He will waste their deeds.

2
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those who
ءَامَنُوا۟believe
وَعَمِلُوا۟and do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deeds
وَءَامَنُوا۟and believe
بِمَاin what
نُزِّلَis revealed
عَلَىٰto
مُحَمَّدٍۢMuhammad
وَهُوَand it
ٱلْحَقُّ(is) the truth
مِنfrom
رَّبِّهِمْ ۙtheir Lord
كَفَّرَHe will remove
عَنْهُمْfrom them
سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْtheir misdeeds
وَأَصْلَحَand improve
بَالَهُمْtheir condition
2

And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muḥammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition.

3
ذَٲلِكَThat
بِأَنَّ(is) because
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
كَفَرُواْdisbelieve
ٱتَّبَعُواْfollow
ٱلْبَـٰطِلَfalsehood
وَأَنَّand that
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ءَامَنُواْbelieve
ٱتَّبَعُواْfollow
ٱلْحَقَّ(the) truth
مِن رَّبِّهِمْ‌ۚfrom
كَذَٲلِكَtheir Lord
يَضْرِبُThus
ٱللَّهُAllah presents
لِلنَّاسِto the people
أَمْثَـٰلَهُمْtheir similitudes
٣

That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allāh present to the people their comparisons.

4
فَإِذَاSo when
لَقِيتُمُyou meet
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
كَفَرُوا۟disbelieve
فَضَرْبَthen strike
ٱلرِّقَابِthe necks
حَتَّىٰٓuntil
إِذَآwhen
أَثْخَنتُمُوهُمْyou have subdued them
فَشُدُّوا۟then bind firmly
ٱلْوَثَاقَthe bond
فَإِمَّاthen either
مَنًّۢاa favor
بَعْدُafterwards
وَإِمَّاor
فِدَآءًransom
حَتَّىٰuntil
تَضَعَlays down
ٱلْحَرْبُthe war
أَوْزَارَهَا ۚits burdens
ذَٰلِكَThat
وَلَوْAnd if
يَشَآءُ ٱللَّهُAllah had willed
لَٱنتَصَرَsurely, He could have taken retribution
مِنْهُمْfrom them
وَلَـٰكِنbut
لِّيَبْلُوَا۟to test
بَعْضَكُمsome of you
بِبَعْضٍۢ ۗwith others
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those who
قُتِلُوا۟are killed
فِىin
سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ(the) way of Allah
فَلَنthen never
يُضِلَّHe will cause to be lost
أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْtheir deeds
4

So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure [their] bonds, and either [confer] favor afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens. That [is the command]. And if Allāh had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allāh - never will He waste their deeds.

5
سَيَهْدِيهِمْHe will guide them
وَيُصْلِحُand improve
بَالَهُمْtheir condition
٥

He will guide them and amend their condition

6
وَيُدْخِلُهُمُAnd admit them
ٱلْجَنَّةَ(to) Paradise
عَرَّفَهَاHe has made it known
لَهُمْto them
٦

And admit them to Paradise, which He has made known to them.

7
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟O you who believe
إِنIf
تَنصُرُوا۟you help
ٱللَّهَAllah
يَنصُرْكُمْHe will help you
وَيُثَبِّتْand make firm
أَقْدَامَكُمْyour feet
7

O you who have believed, if you support Allāh, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.

8
وَٱلَّذِينَBut those who
كَفَرُوا۟disbelieve
فَتَعْسًۭاdestruction (is)
لَّهُمْfor them
وَأَضَلَّand He will cause to be lost
أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْtheir deeds
8

But those who disbelieve - for them is misery, and He will waste their deeds.

9
ذَٰلِكَThat
بِأَنَّهُمْ(is) because they
كَرِهُوا۟hate
مَآwhat
أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُAllah has revealed
فَأَحْبَطَso He has made worthless
أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْtheir deeds
9

That is because they disliked what Allāh revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds.

10
۞ أَفَلَمْDo not
يَسِيرُوا۟they travel
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth
فَيَنظُرُوا۟and see
كَيْفَhow
كَانَwas
عَـٰقِبَةُ(the) end
ٱلَّذِينَ(of) those
مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚbefore them
دَمَّرَ ٱللَّهُAllah destroyed
عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ[over] them
وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَand for the disbelievers
أَمْثَـٰلُهَاits likeness
10

Have they not traveled through the land and seen how was the end of those before them? Allāh destroyed [everything] over them, and for the disbelievers is something comparable.

11
ذَٲلِكَThat
بِأَنَّ(is) because
ٱللَّهَAllah
مَوْلَى(is the) Protector
ٱلَّذِينَ(of) those who
ءَامَنُواْbelieve
وَأَنَّand that
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَthe disbelievers
لَا(there is) no
مَوْلَىٰprotector
لَهُمْfor them
١١

That is because Allāh is the protector of those who have believed and because the disbelievers have no protector.

12
إِنَّIndeed
ٱللَّهَAllah
يُدْخِلُwill admit
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ءَامَنُوا۟believe
وَعَمِلُوا۟and do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deeds
جَنَّـٰتٍۢ(to) Gardens
تَجْرِىflow
مِنfrom
تَحْتِهَاunderneath it
ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖthe rivers
وَٱلَّذِينَbut those who
كَفَرُوا۟disbelieve
يَتَمَتَّعُونَthey enjoy
وَيَأْكُلُونَand eat
كَمَاas
تَأْكُلُeat
ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمُthe cattle
وَٱلنَّارُand the Fire
مَثْوًۭى(will be) an abode
لَّهُمْfor them
12

Indeed, Allāh will admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow, but those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as grazing livestock eat, and the Fire will be a residence for them.

13
وَكَأَيِّنAnd how many
مِّنof
قَرْيَةٍa town
هِىَwhich
أَشَدُّ(was) stronger
قُوَّةًۭ(in) strength
مِّنthan
قَرْيَتِكَyour town
ٱلَّتِىٓwhich
أَخْرَجَتْكَhas driven you out
أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْWe destroyed them
فَلَاso no
نَاصِرَhelper
لَهُمْfor them
13

And how many a city was stronger than your city [i.e., Makkah] which drove you out? We destroyed them; and there was no helper for them.

14
أَفَمَنThen is (he) who
كَانَis
عَلَىٰon
بَيِّنَةٍۢa clear proof
مِّنfrom
رَّبِّهِۦhis Lord
كَمَنlike (he) who
زُيِّنَis made attractive
لَهُۥto him
سُوٓءُ(the) evil
عَمَلِهِۦ(of) his deeds
وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟while they follow
أَهْوَآءَهُمtheir desires
14

So is he who is on clear evidence from his Lord like him to whom the evil of his work has been made attractive and they follow their [own] desires?

15
مَّثَلُA parable
ٱلْجَنَّةِ(of) Paradise
ٱلَّتِىwhich
وُعِدَis promised
ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ ۖ(to) the righteous
فِيهَآTherein
أَنْهَـٰرٌۭ(are) rivers
مِّنof
مَّآءٍwater
غَيْرِnot
ءَاسِنٍۢpolluted
وَأَنْهَـٰرٌۭand rivers
مِّنof
لَّبَنٍۢmilk
لَّمْnot
يَتَغَيَّرْchanges
طَعْمُهُۥits taste
وَأَنْهَـٰرٌۭand rivers
مِّنْof
خَمْرٍۢwine
لَّذَّةٍۢdelicious
لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَfor (the) drinkers
وَأَنْهَـٰرٌۭand rivers
مِّنْof
عَسَلٍۢhoney
مُّصَفًّۭى ۖpurified
وَلَهُمْand for them
فِيهَاtherein
مِنof
كُلِّall
ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِfruits
وَمَغْفِرَةٌۭand forgiveness
مِّنfrom
رَّبِّهِمْ ۖtheir Lord
كَمَنْ هُوَlike he who
خَـٰلِدٌۭ(will) abide forever
فِىin
ٱلنَّارِthe Fire
وَسُقُوا۟and they will be given to drink
مَآءًwater
حَمِيمًۭاboiling
فَقَطَّعَso it cuts into pieces
أَمْعَآءَهُمْtheir intestines
15

Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord... [Are its inhabitants] like those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?

16
وَمِنْهُمAnd among them
مَّن(are some) who
يَسْتَمِعُlisten
إِلَيْكَto you
حَتَّىٰٓuntil
إِذَاwhen
خَرَجُوا۟they depart
مِنْfrom
عِندِكَyou
قَالُوا۟they say
لِلَّذِينَto those who
أُوتُوا۟were given
ٱلْعِلْمَthe knowledge
مَاذَاWhat
قَالَ(has) he said
ءَانِفًا ۚjust now
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThose
ٱلَّذِينَ(are) the ones
طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُAllah has set a seal
عَلَىٰupon
قُلُوبِهِمْtheir hearts
وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟and they follow
أَهْوَآءَهُمْtheir desires
16

And among them, [O Muḥammad], are those who listen to you, until when they depart from you, they say to those who were given knowledge, "What has he said just now?" Those are the ones of whom Allāh has sealed over their hearts and who have followed their [own] desires.

17
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those who
ٱهْتَدَوْا۟accept guidance
زَادَهُمْHe increases them
هُدًۭى(in) guidance
وَءَاتَىٰهُمْand gives them
تَقْوَىٰهُمْtheir righteousness
17

And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness.

18
فَهَلْThen do
يَنظُرُونَthey wait
إِلَّاbut
ٱلسَّاعَةَ(for) the Hour
أَنthat
تَأْتِيَهُمit should come to them
بَغْتَةًۭ ۖsuddenly
فَقَدْBut indeed
جَآءَhave come
أَشْرَاطُهَا ۚits indications
فَأَنَّىٰThen how
لَهُمْto them
إِذَاwhen
جَآءَتْهُمْhas come to them
ذِكْرَىٰهُمْtheir reminder
18

Then do they await except that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come [some of] its indications. Then how [i.e., what good] to them, when it has come, will be their remembrance?

19
فَٱعْلَمْSo know
أَنَّهُۥthat [He]
لَآ(there is) no
إِلَـٰهَgod
إِلَّاbut
ٱللَّهُAllah
وَٱسْتَغْفِرْand ask forgiveness
لِذَنۢبِكَfor your sin
وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَand for the believing men
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ‌ۗand the believing women
وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah
يَعْلَمُknows
مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْyour movement
وَمَثْوَٮٰكُمْand your resting places
١٩

So know, [O Muḥammad], that there is no deity except Allāh and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allāh knows of your movement and your resting place.

20
وَيَقُولُAnd say
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ءَامَنُوا۟believe
لَوْلَاWhy not
نُزِّلَتْhas been revealed
سُورَةٌۭ ۖa Surah
فَإِذَآBut when
أُنزِلَتْis revealed
سُورَةٌۭa Surah
مُّحْكَمَةٌۭprecise
وَذُكِرَand is mentioned
فِيهَاin it
ٱلْقِتَالُ ۙthe fighting
رَأَيْتَyou see
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
فِىin
قُلُوبِهِمtheir hearts
مَّرَضٌۭ(is) a disease
يَنظُرُونَlooking
إِلَيْكَat you
نَظَرَa look
ٱلْمَغْشِىِّ عَلَيْهِ(of) one fainting
مِنَfrom
ٱلْمَوْتِ ۖthe death
فَأَوْلَىٰBut more appropriate
لَهُمْfor them
20

Those who believe say, "Why has a sūrah not been sent down?" But when a precise sūrah is revealed and battle is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them [would have been]

21
طَاعَةٌۭ(Is) obedience
وَقَوْلٌۭand a word
مَّعْرُوفٌۭ ۚkind
فَإِذَاAnd when
عَزَمَ(is) determined
ٱلْأَمْرُthe matter
فَلَوْthen if
صَدَقُوا۟they had been true
ٱللَّهَ(to) Allah
لَكَانَsurely, it would have been
خَيْرًۭاbetter
لَّهُمْfor them
21

Obedience and good words. And when the matter [of fighting] was determined, if they had been true to Allāh, it would have been better for them.

22
فَهَلْThen would
عَسَيْتُمْyou perhaps
إِنif
تَوَلَّيْتُمْyou are given authority
أَنthat
تُفْسِدُوا۟you cause corruption
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth
وَتُقَطِّعُوٓا۟and cut off
أَرْحَامَكُمْyour ties of kinship
22

So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship?

23
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThose
ٱلَّذِينَ(are) the ones
لَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُAllah has cursed them
فَأَصَمَّهُمْso He made them deaf
وَأَعْمَىٰٓand blinded
أَبْصَـٰرَهُمْtheir vision
23

Those [who do so] are the ones that Allāh has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.

24
أَفَلَاThen do not
يَتَدَبَّرُونَthey ponder
ٱلْقُرْءَانَ(over) the Quran
أَمْor
عَلَىٰupon
قُلُوبٍ(their) hearts
أَقْفَالُهَآ(are) locks
٢٤

Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’ān, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?

25
إِنَّIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ٱرْتَدُّوا۟return
عَلَىٰٓon
أَدْبَـٰرِهِمtheir backs
مِّنۢ بَعْدِafter
مَاwhat
تَبَيَّنَ(has) become clear
لَهُمُto them
ٱلْهُدَى ۙ(of) the guidance
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُShaitaan
سَوَّلَenticed
لَهُمْ[for] them
وَأَمْلَىٰand prolonged hope
لَهُمْfor them
25

Indeed, those who reverted back [to disbelief] after guidance had become clear to them - Satan enticed them and prolonged hope for them.
