The Opening
الفاتحةA prayer for guidance that opens the Quran, teaching the reader to turn to Allah, Lord of all creation, before beginning to study His revelation. It affirms Allah's mercy and sovereignty, and frames the whole Quran as the answer to this opening supplication.

بِسْمِIn (the) name
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Gracious
ٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
١
In the name of Allāh, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

ٱلْحَمْدُAll praises and thanks
لِلَّهِ(be) to Allah
رَبِّthe Lord
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَof the universe
٢
[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds -
3
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِThe Most Gracious
ٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
٣
The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,
4
مَـٰلِكِ(The) Master
يَوْمِ(of the) Day
ٱلدِّينِ(of the) Judgment
٤
Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.

إِيَّاكَYou Alone
نَعْبُدُwe worship
وَإِيَّاكَand You Alone
نَسْتَعِينُwe ask for help
٥
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.

ٱهْدِنَاGuide us
ٱلصِّرَٲطَ(to) the path
ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَthe straight
٦
Guide us to the straight path -
7
صِرَٲطَ(The) path
ٱلَّذِينَ(of) those
أَنْعَمْتَYou have bestowed (Your) Favors
عَلَيْهِمْon them
غَيْرِnot (of)
ٱلْمَغْضُوبِthose who earned (Your) wrath
عَلَيْهِمْon themselves
وَلَاand not
ٱلضَّآلِّينَ(of) those who go astray
٧
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
