Al-Baqarah

The Cow

البقرة

An extended invitation to divine guidance, addressed largely to the Children of Israel, reviewing their history to show how straying from revelation led to their decline. It lays out the core articles of faith and establishes many of the foundational laws needed to build the new Muslim community at Madinah.

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allāh -

3
ٱلَّذِينَThose who

بِٱلْغَيْبِin the unseen

Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,

هُمْthey
يُوقِنُونَfirmly believe
4

And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَand those
هُمُthey
ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ(are) the successful ones
5

Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.

6
إِنَّIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
كَفَرُواْdisbelieve[d]
سَوَآءٌ(it) is same
عَلَيْهِمْto them
ءَأَنذَرْتَهُمْwhether you warn them
أَمْor
لَمْnot
تُنذِرْهُمْyou warn them
لَاnot
يُؤْمِنُونَthey believe
٦

Indeed, those who disbelieve - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.

7
خَتَمَHas set a seal
ٱللَّهُAllah
عَلَىٰon
قُلُوبِهِمْtheir hearts
وَعَلَىٰand on
سَمْعِهِمْ ۖtheir hearing
وَعَلَىٰٓand on
أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْtheir vision
غِشَـٰوَةٌۭ ۖ(is) a veil
وَلَهُمْAnd for them
عَذَابٌ(is) a punishment
عَظِيمٌۭgreat
7

Allāh has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.

8
وَمِنَAnd of
ٱلنَّاسِthe people
مَن(are some) who
يَقُولُsay
ءَامَنَّاWe believed
بِٱللَّهِin Allah
وَبِٱلْيَوْمِand in the Day
ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ[the] Last
وَمَاbut not
هُمthey
بِمُؤْمِنِينَ(are) believers (at all)
8

And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh and the Last Day," but they are not believers.

9
يُخَـٰدِعُونَThey seek to deceive
ٱللَّهَAllah
وَٱلَّذِينَand those who
ءَامَنُواْbelieve[d]
وَمَاand not
يَخْدَعُونَthey deceive
إِلَّآexcept
أَنفُسَهُمْthemselves
وَمَاand not
يَشْعُرُونَthey realize (it)
٩

They [think to] deceive Allāh and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.

10
فِىIn
قُلُوبِهِمtheir hearts
مَّرَضٌۭ(is) a disease
فَزَادَهُمُso has increased them
ٱللَّهُAllah
مَرَضًۭا ۖ(in) disease
وَلَهُمْand for them
عَذَابٌ(is) a punishment
أَلِيمٌۢpainful
بِمَاbecause
كَانُوا۟they used to
يَكْذِبُونَ[they] lie
10

In their hearts is disease, so Allāh has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.

11
وَإِذَاAnd when
قِيلَit is said
لَهُمْto them
لَا(Do) not
تُفْسِدُواْspread corruption
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth
قَالُوٓاْthey say
إِنَّمَاOnly
نَحْنُwe
مُصْلِحُونَ(are) reformers
١١

And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers."

12
أَلَآBeware
إِنَّهُمْindeed they
هُمُthemselves
ٱلْمُفْسِدُونَ(are) the ones who spread corruption
وَلَـٰكِن[and] but
لَّاnot
يَشْعُرُونَthey realize (it)
12

Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.

13
وَإِذَاAnd when
قِيلَit is said
لَهُمْto them
ءَامِنُوا۟Believe
كَمَآas
ءَامَنَbelieved
ٱلنَّاسُthe people
قَالُوٓا۟they say
أَنُؤْمِنُShould we believe
كَمَآas
ءَامَنَbelieved
ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ ۗthe fools
أَلَآBeware
إِنَّهُمْcertainly they
هُمُthemselves
ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ(are) the fools
وَلَـٰكِن[and] but
لَّاnot
يَعْلَمُونَthey know
13

And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.

14
وَإِذَاAnd when
لَقُواْthey meet
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ءَامَنُواْbelieve[d]
قَالُوٓاْthey say
ءَامَنَّاWe believe[d]
وَإِذَاBut when
خَلَوْاْthey are alone
إِلَىٰwith
شَيَـٰطِينِهِمْtheir evil ones
قَالُوٓاْthey say
إِنَّاIndeed, we
مَعَكُمْ(are) with you
إِنَّمَاonly
نَحْنُwe
مُسْتَهْزِءُونَ(are) mockers
١٤

And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."

15
ٱللَّهُAllah
يَسْتَهْزِئُmocks
بِهِمْat them
وَيَمُدُّهُمْand prolongs them
فِىin
طُغْيَـٰنِهِمْtheir transgression
يَعْمَهُونَthey wander blindly
١٥

[But] Allāh mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly.

16
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَThose
ٱلَّذِينَ(are) the ones who
ٱشْتَرَوُاْbought
ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةَ[the] astraying
بِٱلْهُدَىٰfor [the] guidance
فَمَاSo not
رَبِحَتprofited
تِّجَـٰرَتُهُمْtheir commerce
وَمَاand not
كَانُواْwere they
مُهْتَدِينَguided-ones
١٦

Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided.

17
مَثَلُهُمْTheir example
كَمَثَلِ(is) like (the) example
ٱلَّذِى(of) the one who
ٱسْتَوْقَدَkindled
نَارًۭاa fire
فَلَمَّآthen, when
أَضَآءَتْit illuminated
مَاwhat
حَوْلَهُۥ(was) around him
ذَهَبَtook away
ٱللَّهُAllah
بِنُورِهِمْtheir light
وَتَرَكَهُمْand left them
فِىin
ظُلُمَـٰتٍۢdarkness[es]
لَّا(so) not
يُبْصِرُونَ(do) they see
17

Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allāh took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see.

18
صُمٌّۢDeaf
بُكْمٌdumb
عُمْىٌۭblind
فَهُمْso they
لَاnot
يَرْجِعُونَ[they] will not return
18

Deaf, dumb and blind - so they will not return [to the right path].

19
أَوْOr
كَصَيِّبٍۢlike a rainstorm
مِّنَfrom
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe sky
فِيهِin it (are)
ظُلُمَـٰتٌۭdarkness[es]
وَرَعْدٌۭand thunder
وَبَرْقٌۭand lightning
يَجْعَلُونَThey put
أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْtheir fingers
فِىٓin
ءَاذَانِهِمtheir ears
مِّنَfrom
ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِthe thunderclaps
حَذَرَ(in) fear (of)
ٱلْمَوْتِ ۚ[the] death
وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah
مُحِيطٌۢ(is) [the One Who] encompasses
بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَthe disbelievers
19

Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allāh is encompassing of the disbelievers.

20
يَكَادُAlmost
ٱلْبَرْقُthe lightning
يَخْطَفُsnatches away
أَبْصَـٰرَهُمْ ۖtheir sight
كُلَّمَآWhenever
أَضَآءَit flashes
لَهُمfor them
مَّشَوْا۟they walk
فِيهِin it
وَإِذَآand when
أَظْلَمَit darkens
عَلَيْهِمْon them
قَامُوا۟ ۚthey stand (still)
وَلَوْAnd if
شَآءَhad willed
ٱللَّهُAllah
لَذَهَبَHe would certainly have taken away
بِسَمْعِهِمْtheir hearing
وَأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ ۚand their sight
إِنَّIndeed
ٱللَّهَAllah
عَلَىٰ(is) on
كُلِّevery
شَىْءٍۢthing
قَدِيرٌۭAll-Powerful
20

The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allāh had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

21
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO
ٱلنَّاسُmankind
ٱعْبُدُوا۟worship
رَبَّكُمُyour Lord
ٱلَّذِىthe One Who
خَلَقَكُمْcreated you
وَٱلَّذِينَand those
مِنfrom
قَبْلِكُمْbefore you
لَعَلَّكُمْso that you may
تَتَّقُونَbecome righteous
21

O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -

22
ٱلَّذِىThe One Who
جَعَلَmade
لَكُمُfor you
ٱلْأَرْضَthe earth
فِرَٰشًۭاa resting place
وَٱلسَّمَآءَand the sky
بِنَآءًۭa canopy
وَأَنزَلَand sent down
مِنَfrom
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe sky
مَآءًۭwater
فَأَخْرَجَthen brought forth
بِهِۦtherewith
مِنَ[of]
ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِthe fruits
رِزْقًۭا(as) provision
لَّكُمْ ۖfor you
فَلَاSo (do) not
تَجْعَلُوا۟set up
لِلَّهِto Allah
أَندَادًۭاrivals
وَأَنتُمْwhile you
تَعْلَمُونَ[you] know
22

[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allāh equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].

23
وَإِنAnd if
كُنتُمْyou are
فِىin
رَيْبٍۢdoubt
مِّمَّاabout what
نَزَّلْنَاWe have revealed
عَلَىٰto
عَبْدِنَاOur slave
فَأْتُوا۟then produce
بِسُورَةٍۢa chapter
مِّن[of]
مِّثْلِهِۦlike it
وَٱدْعُوا۟and call
شُهَدَآءَكُمyour witnesses
مِّنfrom
دُونِother than
ٱللَّهِAllah
إِنif
كُنتُمْyou are
صَـٰدِقِينَtruthful
23

And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down [i.e., the Qur’ān] upon Our Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)], then produce a sūrah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses [i.e., supporters] other than Allāh, if you should be truthful.

24
فَإِنBut if
لَّمْnot
تَفْعَلُوا۟you do
وَلَنand never
تَفْعَلُوا۟will you do
فَٱتَّقُوا۟then fear
ٱلنَّارَthe Fire
ٱلَّتِىwhose
وَقُودُهَا[its] fuel
ٱلنَّاسُ(is) [the] men
وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ ۖand [the] stones
أُعِدَّتْprepared
لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَfor the disbelievers
24

But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.

25
وَبَشِّرِAnd give good news
ٱلَّذِينَ(to) those who
ءَامَنُوا۟believe
وَعَمِلُوا۟and do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ[the] righteous deeds
أَنَّthat
لَهُمْfor them
جَنَّـٰتٍۢ(will be) Gardens

مِن[from]
تَحْتِهَاunder them
ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖthe rivers
كُلَّمَاEvery time
رُزِقُوا۟they are provided

مِنof

رِّزْقًۭا ۙ(as) provision
قَالُوا۟they (will) say
هَـٰذَاThis (is)
ٱلَّذِىthe one which
رُزِقْنَاwe were provided
مِنfrom
قَبْلُ ۖbefore
وَأُتُوا۟And they will be given
بِهِۦtherefrom
مُتَشَـٰبِهًۭا ۖ(things) in resemblance
وَلَهُمْAnd for them
فِيهَآtherein
أَزْوَٰجٌۭspouses
مُّطَهَّرَةٌۭ ۖpurified
وَهُمْand they
فِيهَاtherein
خَـٰلِدُونَ(will) abide forever
25

And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.
