The Elephant

الفيل

Recalls Allah's protection of the Kaabah from the army of the elephant, an event well known to every Makkan, as proof of His power over even the mightiest worldly force.

أَلَمْHave not

تَرَyou seen

كَيْفَhow

فَعَلَdealt

رَبُّكَyour Lord

بِأَصْحَـٰبِwith (the) Companions

ٱلْفِيلِ(of the) Elephant

Have you not considered, [O Muḥammad], how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?

أَلَمْDid not

يَجْعَلْHe make

كَيْدَهُمْtheir plan

فِىgo

تَضْلِيلٍastray

Did He not make their plan into misguidance?

وَأَرْسَلَAnd He sent

عَلَيْهِمْagainst them

طَيْرًاbirds

أَبَابِيلَ(in) flocks

And He sent against them birds in flocks,

تَرْمِيهِمStriking them

بِحِجَارَةٍۢwith stones

مِّنof

سِجِّيلٍۢbaked clay

Striking them with stones of hard clay,

فَجَعَلَهُمْThen He made them

كَعَصْفٍۢlike straw

مَّأْكُولٍۭeaten up

And He made them like eaten straw.
