Surah 13 · Madani · 43 Ayahs

Ar-Ra'd

The Thunder

الرعد

Affirms that the Quran is the truth despite people's rejection of it, presenting Tawhid, Prophethood, and the Resurrection as self-evident truths that people stubbornly refuse to accept.

Alif, Lām, Meem, Rā. These are the verses of the Book; and what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, but most of the people do not believe.

2
ٱللَّهُAllah
ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Who
رَفَعَraised
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens
بِغَيْرِwithout
عَمَدٍۢpillars
تَرَوْنَهَا ۖthat you see
ثُمَّthen
ٱسْتَوَىٰHe established

رَبِّكُمْ(with) your Lord
تُوقِنُونَbelieve with certainty
2

It is Allāh who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then He established Himself above the Throne and made subject the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain.

3
وَهُوَAnd He
ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Who
مَدَّspread
ٱلْأَرْضَthe earth
وَجَعَلَand placed
فِيهَاin it
رَوَٰسِىَfirm mountains
وَأَنْهَـٰرًۭا ۖand rivers

ذَٰلِكَthat
لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢsurely (are) Signs
لِّقَوْمٍۢfor a people
يَتَفَكَّرُونَwho ponder
3

And it is He who spread the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers; and from all of the fruits He made therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

4

ذَٰلِكَthat
لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢsurely (are) Signs
لِّقَوْمٍۢfor a people
يَعْقِلُونَwho use reason
4

And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason.

5
۞ وَإِنAnd if
تَعْجَبْyou (are) astonished
فَعَجَبٌۭthen astonishing
قَوْلُهُمْ(is) their saying
أَءِذَاWhen
كُنَّاwe are
تُرَٰبًاdust
أَءِنَّاwill we
لَفِى(be) indeed, in
خَلْقٍۢa creation
جَدِيدٍ ۗnew
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَThose
ٱلَّذِينَ(are) the ones who
كَفَرُوا۟disbelieved
بِرَبِّهِمْ ۖin their Lord
وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَand those
ٱلْأَغْلَـٰلُthe iron chains
فِىٓ(will be) in
أَعْنَاقِهِمْ ۖtheir necks
وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthose
أَصْحَـٰبُ(are the) companions
ٱلنَّارِ ۖ(of) the Fire
هُمْthey
فِيهَاin it
خَـٰلِدُونَ(will) abide forever
5

And if you are astonished, [O Muḥammad] - then astonishing is their saying, "When we are dust, will we indeed be [brought] into a new creation?" Those are the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord, and those will have shackles upon their necks, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.

6
وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَAnd they ask you to hasten
بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِthe evil
قَبْلَbefore
ٱلْحَسَنَةِthe good
وَقَدْand verily
خَلَتْhas occurred
مِنfrom
قَبْلِهِمُbefore them
ٱلْمَثُلَـٰتُ ۗ[the] similar punishments
وَإِنَّAnd indeed
رَبَّكَyour Lord
لَذُو(is) full
مَغْفِرَةٍۢ(of) forgiveness
لِّلنَّاسِfor mankind
عَلَىٰfor
ظُلْمِهِمْ ۖtheir wrongdoing
وَإِنَّand indeed
رَبَّكَyour Lord
لَشَدِيدُ(is) severe
ٱلْعِقَابِ(in) the penalty
6

They impatiently urge you to bring about evil before good, while there has already occurred before them similar punishments [to what they demand]. And indeed, your Lord is the possessor of forgiveness for the people despite their wrongdoing, and indeed, your Lord is severe in penalty.

7
وَيَقُولُAnd say
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
كَفَرُوا۟disbelieved
لَوْلَآWhy not
أُنزِلَhas been sent down
عَلَيْهِto him

إِنَّمَآOnly
أَنتَyou
مُنذِرٌۭ ۖ(are) a warner
وَلِكُلِّand for every
قَوْمٍpeople
هَادٍ(is) a guide
7

And those who disbelieved say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" You are only a warner, and for every people is a guide.

8
ٱللَّهُAllah
يَعْلَمُknows
مَاwhat
تَحْمِلُcarries
كُلُّevery
أُنثَىٰfemale
وَمَاand what
تَغِيضُfall short
ٱلْأَرْحَامُthe womb
وَمَاand what
تَزْدَادُ‌ۖthey exceed
وَكُلُّAnd every
شَىْءٍthing
عِندَهُۥwith Him
بِمِقْدَارٍ(is) in due proportion
٨

Allāh knows what every female carries and what the wombs lose [prematurely] or exceed. And everything with Him is by due measure.

9
عَـٰلِمُKnower
ٱلْغَيْبِ(of) the unseen
وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِand the witnessed
ٱلْكَبِيرُthe Most Great
ٱلْمُتَعَالِthe Most High
٩

[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Exalted.

10
سَوَآءٌۭ(It is) same (to Him)
مِّنكُم[of you]
مَّنْ(one) who
أَسَرَّconceals
ٱلْقَوْلَthe speech
وَمَنor (one) who

بِهِۦit
وَمَنْand (one) who
هُوَ[he]
مُسْتَخْفٍۭ(is) hidden
بِٱلَّيْلِby night
وَسَارِبٌۢor goes freely
بِٱلنَّهَارِby day
10

It is the same [to Him] concerning you whether one conceals [his] speech or publicizes it and whether one is hidden by night or conspicuous [among others] by day.

11
لَهُۥFor him
مُعَقِّبَـٰتٌۭ(are) successive (Angels)
مِّنۢfrom

مِنْby
أَمْرِ(the) command
ٱللَّهِ ۗ(of) Allah
إِنَّIndeed
ٱللَّهَAllah
لَا(does) not
يُغَيِّرُchange
مَا(the condition)
بِقَوْمٍof a people
حَتَّىٰuntil
يُغَيِّرُوا۟they change
مَاwhat
بِأَنفُسِهِمْ ۗ(is) in themselves
وَإِذَآAnd when
أَرَادَwills
ٱللَّهُAllah
بِقَوْمٍۢfor a people
سُوٓءًۭاmisfortune

مَرَدَّturning away
لَهُۥ ۚof it
وَمَاand not
لَهُمfor them
مِّنfrom
دُونِهِۦbesides Him
مِنany
وَالٍprotector
11

For him [i.e., each one] are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allāh intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.

12
هُوَHe
ٱلَّذِى(is) the One Who
يُرِيكُمُshows you
ٱلْبَرْقَthe lightning
خَوْفًۭاa fear
وَطَمَعًۭاand a hope
وَيُنشِئُand brings up
ٱلسَّحَابَthe clouds
ٱلثِّقَالَthe heavy
12

It is He who shows you lightning, [causing] fear and aspiration, and generates the heavy clouds.

13
وَيُسَبِّحُAnd glorifies
ٱلرَّعْدُthe thunder
بِحَمْدِهِۦwith his praise
وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُand the Angels
مِنْfor
خِيفَتِهِۦfear of Him
وَيُرْسِلُAnd He sends
ٱلصَّوَٰعِقَthe thunderbolts

فِىabout
ٱللَّهِAllah
وَهُوَAnd He
شَدِيدُ(is) Mighty
ٱلْمِحَالِ(in) Strength
13

And the thunder exalts [Allāh] with praise of Him - and the angels [as well] from fear of Him - and He sends thunderbolts and strikes therewith whom He wills while they dispute about Allāh; and He is severe in assault.

14
لَهُۥTo Him
دَعْوَةُ(is) supplication
ٱلْحَقِّ ۖ(of) the truth
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those whom
يَدْعُونَthey invoke
مِن دُونِهِۦbesides Him
لَاnot
يَسْتَجِيبُونَthey respond
لَهُمto them
بِشَىْءٍwith a thing
إِلَّاexcept
كَبَـٰسِطِlike one who stretches
كَفَّيْهِhis hands
إِلَىtowards
ٱلْمَآءِwater
لِيَبْلُغَto reach
فَاهُhis mouth
وَمَاbut not
هُوَit
بِبَـٰلِغِهِۦ ۚreaches it
وَمَاAnd not
دُعَآءُ(is) the supplication
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ(of) the disbelievers
إِلَّاbut
فِىin
ضَلَـٰلٍۢerror
14

To Him [alone] is the supplication of truth. And those they call upon besides Him do not respond to them with a thing, except as one who stretches his hands toward water [from afar, calling it] to reach his mouth, but it will not reach it [thus]. And the supplication of the disbelievers is not but in error [i.e., futility].

15
وَلِلَّهِAnd to Allah
يَسْجُدُprostrates
مَنwhoever

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِand the earth

وَظِلَـٰلُهُمand (so do) their shadows
بِٱلْغُدُوِّin the mornings
وَٱلْـَٔاصَالِ ۩and in the afternoons
15

And to Allāh prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and their shadows [as well] in the mornings and the afternoons.

16

16

Say, "Who is Lord of the heavens and earth?" Say, "Allāh." Say, "Have you then taken besides Him allies not possessing [even] for themselves any benefit or any harm?" Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Or is darkness equivalent to light? Or have they attributed to Allāh partners who created like His creation so that the creation [of each] seemed similar to them?" Say, "Allāh is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Prevailing."

17

كَذَٰلِكَThus
يَضْرِبُ ٱللَّهُAllah sets forth
ٱلْأَمْثَالَthe examples
17

He sends down from the sky, rain, and valleys flow according to their capacity, and the torrent carries a rising foam. And from that [ore] which they heat in the fire, desiring adornments and utensils, is a foam like it. Thus Allāh presents [the example of] truth and falsehood. As for the foam, it vanishes, [being] cast off; but as for that which benefits the people, it remains on the earth. Thus does Allāh present examples.

18
لِلَّذِينَFor those who
ٱسْتَجَابُوا۟responded
لِرَبِّهِمُto their Lord

جَهَنَّمُ ۖ(is) Hell
وَبِئْسَand wretched
ٱلْمِهَادُ(is) the resting place
18

For those who have responded to their Lord is the best [reward], but those who did not respond to Him - if they had all that is in the earth entirely and the like of it with it, they would [attempt to] ransom themselves thereby. Those will have the worst account, and their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the resting place.

19
۞ أَفَمَنThen is (he) who

Then is he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind? They will only be reminded who are people of understanding -

20
