بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
ٱقْتَرَبَ(Has) approached
لِلنَّاسِfor [the] mankind
حِسَابُهُمْtheir account
وَهُمْwhile they
فِى(are) in
غَفْلَةٍۢheedlessness
مُّعْرِضُونَturning away
1

[The time of] their account has approached for the people, while they are in heedlessness turning away.

2
مَاNot
يَأْتِيهِمcomes to them
مِّنof
ذِكْرٍۢa Reminder
مِّنfrom
رَّبِّهِمtheir Lord
مُّحْدَثٍanew
إِلَّاexcept
ٱسْتَمَعُوهُthey listen to it
وَهُمْwhile they
يَلْعَبُونَ(are at) play
2

No mention [i.e., revelation] comes to them anew from their Lord except that they listen to it while they are at play

3
لَاهِيَةًۭDistracted
قُلُوبُهُمْ ۗtheir hearts
وَأَسَرُّوا۟And they conceal
ٱلنَّجْوَىthe private conversation
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ظَلَمُوا۟[they] wronged
هَلْIs
هَـٰذَآthis
إِلَّاexcept
بَشَرٌۭa human being
مِّثْلُكُمْ ۖlike you
أَفَتَأْتُونَSo would you approach
ٱلسِّحْرَthe magic
وَأَنتُمْwhile you
تُبْصِرُونَsee (it)
3

With their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private conversation, [saying], "Is this [Prophet] except a human being like you? So would you approach magic while you are aware [of it]?"

4
قَالَHe said
رَبِّىMy Lord
يَعْلَمُknows
ٱلْقَوْلَthe word
فِىin
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ‌ۖand the earth
وَهُوَAnd He
ٱلسَّمِيعُ(is) the All-Hearer
ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knower
٤

He [the Prophet (ﷺ)] said, "My Lord knows whatever is said throughout the heaven and earth, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing."

5
بَلْNay
قَالُوٓا۟they say
أَضْغَـٰثُMuddled
أَحْلَـٰمٍۭdreams
بَلِnay
ٱفْتَرَىٰهُhe (has) invented it
بَلْnay
هُوَhe
شَاعِرٌۭ(is) a poet
فَلْيَأْتِنَاSo let him bring us
بِـَٔايَةٍۢa sign
كَمَآlike what
أُرْسِلَwas sent
ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ(to) the former
5

But they say, "[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles]."

6
مَآNot
ءَامَنَتْbelieved
قَبْلَهُمbefore them
مِّنany
قَرْيَةٍtown
أَهْلَكْنَـٰهَآ ۖwhich We destroyed
أَفَهُمْso will they
يُؤْمِنُونَbelieve
6

Not a [single] city which We destroyed believed before them, so will they believe?

7
وَمَآAnd not
أَرْسَلْنَاWe sent
قَبْلَكَbefore you
إِلَّاexcept
رِجَالًۭاmen
نُّوحِىٓWe revealed
إِلَيْهِمْ ۖto them
فَسْـَٔلُوٓا۟So ask
أَهْلَ(the) people
ٱلذِّكْرِ(of) the Reminder
إِنif
كُنتُمْyou
لَا(do) not
تَعْلَمُونَknow
7

And We sent not before you, [O Muḥammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message [i.e., former scriptures] if you do not know.

8
وَمَاAnd not
جَعَلْنَـٰهُمْWe made them
جَسَدًۭاbodies
لَّاnot
يَأْكُلُونَeating
ٱلطَّعَامَthe food
وَمَاand not
كَانُوا۟they were
خَـٰلِدِينَimmortals
8

And We did not make them [i.e., the prophets] forms not eating food, nor were they immortal [on earth].

9
ثُمَّThen
صَدَقْنَـٰهُمُWe fulfilled (for) them
ٱلْوَعْدَthe promise
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُمْand We saved them
وَمَنand whom
نَّشَآءُWe willed
وَأَهْلَكْنَاand We destroyed
ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَthe transgressors
9

Then We fulfilled for them the promise, and We saved them and whom We willed and destroyed the transgressors.

10
لَقَدْIndeed
أَنزَلْنَآWe (have) sent down
إِلَيْكُمْto you
كِتَـٰبًۭاa Book
فِيهِin it
ذِكْرُكُمْ ۖ(is) your mention
أَفَلَاThen will not
تَعْقِلُونَyou use reason
10

We have certainly sent down to you a Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in which is your mention. Then will you not reason?

11
وَكَمْAnd how many
قَصَمْنَاWe (have) shattered
مِنof
قَرْيَةٍۢa town
كَانَتْ(that) was
ظَالِمَةًۭunjust
وَأَنشَأْنَاand We produced
بَعْدَهَاafter them
قَوْمًا ءَاخَرِينَanother people
11

And how many a city which was unjust have We shattered and produced after it another people.

12
فَلَمَّآThen when
أَحَسُّوا۟they perceived
بَأْسَنَآOur torment
إِذَاbehold
هُمthey
مِّنْهَاfrom it
يَرْكُضُونَwere fleeing
12

And when they [i.e., its inhabitants] perceived Our punishment, at once they fled from it.

13
لَا تَرْكُضُوا۟Flee not
وَٱرْجِعُوٓا۟but return
إِلَىٰto
مَآwhat
أُتْرِفْتُمْyou were given luxury
فِيهِin it
وَمَسَـٰكِنِكُمْand to your homes
لَعَلَّكُمْso that you may
تُسْـَٔلُونَbe questioned
13

[Some angels said], "Do not flee but return to where you were given luxury and to your homes - perhaps you will be questioned."

14
قَالُواْThey said
يَـٰوَيْلَنَآO woe to us
إِنَّاIndeed, [we]
كُنَّاwe were
ظَـٰلِمِينَwrongdoers
١٤

They said, "O woe to us! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."

15
فَمَاThen not
زَالَتceased
تِّلْكَ[this]
دَعْوَٮٰهُمْtheir cry
حَتَّىٰuntil
جَعَلْنَـٰهُمْWe made them
حَصِيدًاreaped
خَـٰمِدِينَextinct
١٥

And that declaration of theirs did not cease until We made them [as] a harvest [mowed down], extinguished [like a fire].

16
وَمَاAnd not
خَلَقْنَاWe created
ٱلسَّمَآءَthe heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضَand the earth
وَمَاand what
بَيْنَهُمَا(is) between them
لَـٰعِبِينَ(for) playing
١٦

And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play.

17
لَوْIf
أَرَدْنَآWe intended
أَنthat
نَّتَّخِذَWe take
لَهْوًۭاa pastime
لَّٱتَّخَذْنَـٰهُsurely We (could have) taken it
مِنfrom
لَّدُنَّآUs
إِنif
كُنَّاWe were
فَـٰعِلِينَdoers
17

Had We intended to take a diversion, We could have taken it from [what is] with Us - if [indeed] We were to do so.

18
بَلْNay
نَقْذِفُWe hurl
بِٱلْحَقِّthe truth
عَلَىagainst
ٱلْبَـٰطِلِ[the] falsehood
فَيَدْمَغُهُۥand it breaks its head
فَإِذَاbehold
هُوَit (is)
زَاهِقٌۭ ۚvanishing
وَلَكُمُAnd for you
ٱلْوَيْلُ(is) destruction
مِمَّاfor what
تَصِفُونَyou ascribe
18

Rather, We dash the truth upon falsehood, and it destroys it, and thereupon it departs. And for you is destruction from that which you describe.

19
وَلَهُۥAnd to Him (belongs)
مَنwhoever
فِى(is) in
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚand the earth
وَمَنْAnd (those) who
عِندَهُۥ(are) near Him
لَاnot
يَسْتَكْبِرُونَthey are arrogant
عَنْto
عِبَادَتِهِۦworship Him
وَلَاand not
يَسْتَحْسِرُونَthey tire
19

To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those near Him [i.e., the angels] are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, nor do they tire.

20
يُسَبِّحُونَThey glorify (Him)
ٱلَّيْلَ[the] night
وَٱلنَّهَارَand [the] day
لَاnot
يَفْتُرُونَthey slacken
٢٠

They exalt [Him] night and day [and] do not slacken.

21
أَمِOr
ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟(have) they taken
ءَالِهَةًۭgods
مِّنَfrom
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth
هُمْthey
يُنشِرُونَraise (the dead)
21

Or have they [i.e., men] taken for themselves gods from the earth who resurrect [the dead]?

22
لَوْIf
كَانَ(there) were
فِيهِمَآin both of them
ءَالِهَةٌgods
إِلَّاbesides
ٱللَّهُAllah
لَفَسَدَتَا‌ۚsurely they (would) have been ruined
فَسُبْحَـٰنَSo glorified
ٱللَّهِ(is) Allah
رَبِّLord
ٱلْعَرْشِ(of) the Throne
عَمَّا(above) what
يَصِفُونَthey attribute
٢٢

Had there been within them [i.e., the heavens and earth] gods besides Allāh, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allāh, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.

23
لَاNot
يُسْــَٔلُHe (can) be questioned
عَمَّاabout what
يَفْعَلُHe does
وَهُمْbut they
يُسْــَٔلُونَwill be questioned
٢٣

He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned.

24
أَمِOr
ٱتَّخَذُوا۟(have) they taken
مِن دُونِهِۦٓbesides Him
ءَالِهَةًۭ ۖgods
قُلْSay
هَاتُوا۟Bring
بُرْهَـٰنَكُمْ ۖyour proof
هَـٰذَاThis
ذِكْرُ(is) a Reminder
مَن(for those) who
مَّعِىَ(are) with me
وَذِكْرُand a Reminder
مَن(for those) who
قَبْلِى ۗ(were) before me
بَلْBut
أَكْثَرُهُمْmost of them
لَا(do) not
يَعْلَمُونَknow
ٱلْحَقَّ ۖthe truth
فَهُمso they
مُّعْرِضُونَ(are) averse
24

Or have they taken gods besides Him? Say, [O Muḥammad], "Produce your proof. This [Qur’ān] is the message for those with me and the message of those before me." But most of them do not know the truth, so they are turning away.

25
وَمَآAnd not
أَرْسَلْنَاWe sent
مِن قَبْلِكَbefore you
مِنany
رَّسُولٍMessenger
إِلَّاbut
نُوحِىٓWe reveal(ed)
إِلَيْهِto him
أَنَّهُۥthat [He]
لَآ(There is) no
إِلَـٰهَgod
إِلَّآexcept
أَنَا۠Me
فَٱعْبُدُونِso worship Me
25

And We sent not before you any messenger except We revealed to him that, "There is no deity except Me, so worship Me."
