الٓمٓAlif Laam Meem
١

Alif, Lām, Meem.

2
أَحَسِبَDo think
ٱلنَّاسُthe people
أَنthat
يُتْرَكُوٓا۟they will be left
أَنbecause
يَقُولُوٓا۟they say
ءَامَنَّاWe believe
وَهُمْand they
لَا يُفْتَنُونَwill not be tested
2

Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?

3
وَلَقَدْAnd indeed
فَتَنَّاWe tested
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۖ(were) before them
فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُAnd Allah will surely make evident
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
صَدَقُوا۟(are) truthful
وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّand He will surely make evident
ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَthe liars
3

But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allāh will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.

4
أَمْOr
حَسِبَthink
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
يَعْمَلُونَdo
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِevil deeds
أَنthat
يَسْبِقُونَا ۚthey can outrun Us
سَآءَEvil is
مَاwhat
يَحْكُمُونَthey judge
4

Or do those who do evil deeds think they can outrun [i.e., escape] Us? Evil is what they judge.

5
مَنWhoever
كَانَ[is]
يَرْجُوا۟hopes
لِقَآءَ(for the) meeting
ٱللَّهِ(with) Allah
فَإِنَّthen indeed
أَجَلَ(the) Term
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah
لَـَٔاتٍۢ ۚ(is) surely coming
وَهُوَAnd He
ٱلسَّمِيعُ(is) the All-Hearer
ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knower
5

Whoever should hope for the meeting with Allāh - indeed, the term [decreed by] Allāh is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

6
وَمَنAnd whoever
جَـٰهَدَstrives
فَإِنَّمَاthen only
يُجَـٰهِدُhe strives
لِنَفْسِهِۦٓ ۚfor himself
إِنَّIndeed
ٱللَّهَAllah
لَغَنِىٌّ(is) Free from need
عَنِof
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَthe worlds
6

And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allāh is Free from need of the worlds.

7
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those who
ءَامَنُواْbelieve
وَعَمِلُواْand do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous (deeds)
لَنُكَفِّرَنَّsurely, We will remove
عَنْهُمْfrom them
سَيِّـَٔـاتِهِمْtheir evil deeds
وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْand We will surely reward them
أَحْسَنَ(the) best
ٱلَّذِى(of) what
كَانُواْthey used
يَعْمَلُونَ(to) do
٧

And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.

8
وَوَصَّيْنَاAnd We have enjoined
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ(on) man
بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ حُسْنًۭا ۖgoodness to his parents
وَإِنbut if
جَـٰهَدَاكَthey both strive against you
لِتُشْرِكَto make you associate
بِىwith Me
مَاwhat
لَيْسَnot
لَكَyou have
بِهِۦof it
عِلْمٌۭany knowledge
فَلَاthen (do) not
تُطِعْهُمَآ ۚobey both of them
إِلَىَّTo Me
مَرْجِعُكُمْ(is) your return
فَأُنَبِّئُكُمand I will inform you
بِمَاabout what
كُنتُمْyou used
تَعْمَلُونَ(to) do
8

And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.

9
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those who
ءَامَنُواْbelieve
وَعَمِلُواْand do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deeds
لَنُدْخِلَنَّهُمْWe will surely admit them
فِىamong
ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَthe righteous
٩

And those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely admit them among the righteous [into Paradise].

10
وَمِنَAnd of
ٱلنَّاسِthe people
مَن(is he) who
يَقُولُsays
ءَامَنَّاWe believe
بِٱللَّهِin Allah
فَإِذَآBut when
أُوذِىَhe is harmed
فِىin
ٱللَّهِ(the Way of) Allah
جَعَلَhe considers
فِتْنَةَ(the) trial
ٱلنَّاسِ(of) the people
كَعَذَابِas (the) punishment
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah
وَلَئِنBut if
جَآءَcomes
نَصْرٌۭvictory
مِّنfrom
رَّبِّكَyour Lord
لَيَقُولُنَّsurely they say
إِنَّاIndeed, we
كُنَّاwere
مَعَكُمْ ۚwith you
أَوَلَيْسَIs not
ٱللَّهُAllah
بِأَعْلَمَmost knowing
بِمَاof what
فِى(is) in
صُدُورِ(the) breasts
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ(of) the worlds
10

And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allāh, he considers the trial [i.e., harm] of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allāh. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is within the breasts of the worlds [i.e., all creatures]?

11
وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُAnd Allah will surely make evident
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ءَامَنُوا۟believe
وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّAnd He will surely make evident
ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَthe hypocrites
11

And Allāh will surely make evident those who believe, and He will surely make evident the hypocrites.

12
وَقَالَAnd said
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
كَفَرُوا۟disbelieve
لِلَّذِينَto those who
ءَامَنُوا۟believe
ٱتَّبِعُوا۟Follow
سَبِيلَنَاour way
وَلْنَحْمِلْand we will carry
خَطَـٰيَـٰكُمْyour sins
وَمَاBut not
هُمthey
بِحَـٰمِلِينَ(are) going to carry
مِنْof
خَطَـٰيَـٰهُمtheir sins
مِّنany
شَىْءٍ ۖthing
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, they
لَكَـٰذِبُونَ(are) surely liars
12

And those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Follow our way, and we will carry your sins." But they will not carry anything of their sins. Indeed, they are liars.

13
وَلَيَحْمِلُنَّBut surely they will carry
أَثْقَالَهُمْtheir burdens
وَأَثْقَالًۭاand burdens
مَّعَwith
أَثْقَالِهِمْ ۖtheir burdens
وَلَيُسْـَٔلُنَّand surely they will be questioned
يَوْمَ(on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrection
عَمَّاabout what
كَانُوا۟they used
يَفْتَرُونَ(to) invent
13

But they will surely carry their [own] burdens and [other] burdens along with their burdens, and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to invent.

14
وَلَقَدْAnd verily
أَرْسَلْنَاWe sent
نُوحًاNuh
إِلَىٰto
قَوْمِهِۦhis people
فَلَبِثَand he remained
فِيهِمْamong them
أَلْفَa thousand
سَنَةٍyear(s)
إِلَّاsave
خَمْسِينَfifty
عَامًۭاyear(s)
فَأَخَذَهُمُthen seized them
ٱلطُّوفَانُthe flood
وَهُمْwhile they
ظَـٰلِمُونَ(were) wrongdoers
14

And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.

15
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُBut We saved him
وَأَصْحَـٰبَand (the) people
ٱلسَّفِينَةِ(of) the ship
وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَآand We made it
ءَايَةًۭa Sign
لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَfor the worlds
15

But We saved him and the companions of the ship, and We made it a sign for the worlds.

16
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَAnd Ibrahim
إِذْwhen
قَالَhe said
لِقَوْمِهِto his people
ٱعْبُدُوا۟Worship
ٱللَّهَAllah
وَٱتَّقُوهُ ۖand fear Him
ذَٰلِكُمْThat
خَيْرٌۭ(is) better
لَّكُمْfor you
إِنif
كُنتُمْyou
تَعْلَمُونَknow
16

And [We sent] Abraham, when he said to his people, "Worship Allāh and fear Him. That is best for you, if you should know.

17
إِنَّمَاOnly
تَعْبُدُونَyou worship
مِن دُونِbesides
ٱللَّهِAllah
أَوْثَـٰنًۭاidols
وَتَخْلُقُونَand you create
إِفْكًا ۚfalsehood
إِنَّIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَthose whom
تَعْبُدُونَyou worship
مِن دُونِbesides
ٱللَّهِAllah
لَا(do) not
يَمْلِكُونَpossess
لَكُمْfor you
رِزْقًۭاany provision
فَٱبْتَغُوا۟So seek
عِندَfrom
ٱللَّهِAllah
ٱلرِّزْقَthe provision
وَٱعْبُدُوهُand worship Him
وَٱشْكُرُوا۟and be grateful
لَهُۥٓ ۖ إِلَيْهِto Him
تُرْجَعُونَyou will be returned
17

You only worship, besides Allāh, idols, and you produce a falsehood. Indeed, those you worship besides Allāh do not possess for you [the power of] provision. So seek from Allāh provision and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned."

18
وَإِنAnd if
تُكَذِّبُوا۟you deny
فَقَدْthen verily
كَذَّبَdenied
أُمَمٌۭ(the) nations
مِّن قَبْلِكُمْ ۖbefore you
وَمَاAnd not
عَلَى(is) on
ٱلرَّسُولِthe Messenger
إِلَّاexcept
ٱلْبَلَـٰغُthe conveyance
ٱلْمُبِينُclear
18

And if you [people] deny [the message] - already nations before you have denied. And there is not upon the Messenger except [the duty of] clear notification.

19
أَوَلَمْDo not
يَرَوْا۟they see
كَيْفَhow
يُبْدِئُ ٱللَّهُAllah originates
ٱلْخَلْقَthe creation
ثُمَّthen
يُعِيدُهُۥٓ ۚrepeats it
إِنَّIndeed
ذَٰلِكَthat
عَلَىfor
ٱللَّهِAllah
يَسِيرٌۭ(is) easy
19

Have they not considered how Allāh begins creation and then repeats it? Indeed that, for Allāh, is easy.

20
قُلْSay
سِيرُوا۟Travel
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth
فَٱنظُرُوا۟and see
كَيْفَhow
بَدَأَHe originated
ٱلْخَلْقَ ۚthe creation
ثُمَّThen
ٱللَّهُAllah
يُنشِئُwill produce
ٱلنَّشْأَةَthe creation
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۚthe last
إِنَّIndeed
ٱللَّهَAllah
عَلَىٰon
كُلِّevery
شَىْءٍۢthing
قَدِيرٌۭ(is) All-Powerful
20

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allāh will produce the final creation [i.e., development]. Indeed Allāh, over all things, is competent."

21
يُعَذِّبُHe punishes
مَنwhom
يَشَآءُHe wills
وَيَرْحَمُand has mercy
مَن(on) whom
يَشَآءُ ۖHe wills
وَإِلَيْهِand to Him
تُقْلَبُونَyou will be returned
21

He punishes whom He wills and has mercy upon whom He wills, and to Him you will be returned.

22
وَمَآAnd not
أَنتُمyou
بِمُعْجِزِينَcan escape
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth
وَلَاand not
فِىin
ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۖthe heaven
وَمَاAnd not
لَكُمfor you
مِّن دُونِbesides
ٱللَّهِAllah
مِنany
وَلِىٍّۢprotector
وَلَاand not
نَصِيرٍۢa helper
22

And you will not cause failure [to Allāh] upon the earth or in the heaven. And you have not other than Allāh any protector or any helper.

23
وَٱلَّذِينَAnd those who
كَفَرُوا۟disbelieve
بِـَٔايَـٰتِin (the) Signs
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah
وَلِقَآئِهِۦٓand (the) meeting (with) Him
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthose
يَئِسُوا۟(have) despaired
مِنof
رَّحْمَتِىMy Mercy
وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَAnd those
لَهُمْfor them
عَذَابٌ(is) a punishment
أَلِيمٌۭpainful
23

And the ones who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh and the meeting with Him - those have despaired of My mercy, and they will have a painful punishment.

24
فَمَاAnd not
كَانَwas
جَوَابَ(the) answer
قَوْمِهِۦٓ(of) his people
إِلَّآexcept
أَنthat
قَالُوا۟they said
ٱقْتُلُوهُKill him
أَوْor
حَرِّقُوهُburn him
فَأَنجَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُBut Allah saved him
مِنَfrom
ٱلنَّارِ ۚthe fire
إِنَّIndeed
فِىin
ذَٰلِكَthat
لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢsurely (are) Signs
لِّقَوْمٍۢfor a people
يُؤْمِنُونَwho believe
24

And the answer of his [i.e., Abraham's] people was not but that they said, "Kill him or burn him," but Allāh saved him from the fire. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

25
وَقَالَAnd he said
إِنَّمَاOnly
ٱتَّخَذْتُمyou have taken
مِّن دُونِbesides
ٱللَّهِAllah
أَوْثَـٰنًۭاidols
مَّوَدَّةَ(out of) love
بَيْنِكُمْamong you
فِىin
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِthe life
ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ(of) the world
ثُمَّThen
يَوْمَ(on the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrection
يَكْفُرُyou will deny

ٱلنَّارُ(will be) the Fire
وَمَاand not
لَكُمfor you

25

And [Abraham] said, "You have only taken, other than Allāh, idols as [a bond of] affection among you in worldly life. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another and curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will not have any helpers."
