بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
حمٓHa Meem
١

Ḥā, Meem.

2
وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِBy the Book
ٱلْمُبِينِthe clear
٢

By the clear Book,

3
إِنَّاIndeed, We
جَعَلْنَـٰهُ(have) made it
قُرْءَٰنًاa Quran
عَرَبِيًّۭا(in) Arabic
لَّعَلَّكُمْso that you may
تَعْقِلُونَunderstand
3

Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.

4
وَإِنَّهُۥAnd indeed, it
فِىٓ(is) in
أُمِّ(the) Mother
ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ(of) the Book
لَدَيْنَاwith Us
لَعَلِىٌّsurely exalted
حَكِيمٌfull of wisdom
٤

And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.

5
أَفَنَضْرِبُThen should We take away
عَنكُمُfrom you
ٱلذِّكْرَthe Reminder
صَفْحًاdisregarding (you)
أَنbecause
كُنتُمْyou are
قَوْمًۭاa people
مُّسْرِفِينَtransgressing
5

Then should We turn the message away, disregarding you, because you are a transgressing people?

6
وَكَمْAnd how many
أَرْسَلْنَاWe sent
مِنof
نَّبِىٍّۢa Prophet
فِىamong
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَthe former (people)
6

And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,

7
وَمَاAnd not
يَأْتِيهِم مِّن نَّبِىٍّcame to them
إِلَّاany Prophet
كَانُواْbut
بِهِۦthey used to
يَسْتَهْزِءُونَmock at him
٧

But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.

8
فَأَهْلَكْنَآThen We destroyed
أَشَدَّstronger
مِنْهُمthan them
بَطْشًۭا(in) power
وَمَضَىٰand has passed
مَثَلُ(the) example
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ(of) the former (people)
8

And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.

9
وَلَئِنAnd if
سَأَلْتَهُمyou ask them
مَّنْWho
خَلَقَcreated
ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِthe heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضَand the earth
لَيَقُولُنَّThey will surely say
خَلَقَهُنَّCreated them
ٱلْعَزِيزُthe All-Mighty
ٱلْعَلِيمُthe All-Knower
9

And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,"

10
ٱلَّذِىThe One Who
جَعَلَmade
لَكُمُfor you
ٱلْأَرْضَthe earth
مَهْدًۭاa bed
وَجَعَلَand made
لَكُمْfor you
فِيهَاtherein
سُبُلًۭاroads
لَّعَلَّكُمْso that you may
تَهْتَدُونَ(be) guided
10

[The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided

11
وَٱلَّذِىAnd the One Who
نَزَّلَsends down
مِنَfrom
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe sky
مَآءًۢwater
بِقَدَرٍۢin (due) measure
فَأَنشَرْنَاthen We revive
بِهِۦwith it
بَلْدَةًۭa land
مَّيْتًۭا ۚdead
كَذَٰلِكَthus
تُخْرَجُونَyou will be brought forth
11

And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -

12
وَٱلَّذِىAnd the One Who
خَلَقَcreated
ٱلْأَزْوَٰجَthe pairs
كُلَّهَاall of them
وَجَعَلَand made
لَكُمfor you
مِّنَ[of]
ٱلْفُلْكِthe ships
وَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِand the cattle
مَاwhat
تَرْكَبُونَyou ride
12

And who created the species, all of them, and has made for you of ships and animals those which you mount

13
لِتَسْتَوُۥاْThat you may sit firmly
عَلَىٰon
ظُهُورِهِۦtheir backs
ثُمَّthen
تَذْكُرُواْremember
نِعْمَةَ(the) favor
رَبِّكُمْ(of) your Lord
إِذَاwhen
ٱسْتَوَيْتُمْyou sit firmly
عَلَيْهِon them
وَتَقُولُواْand say
سُبْحَـٰنَGlory be (to)
ٱلَّذِىthe One Who
سَخَّرَ(has) subjected
لَنَاto us
هَـٰذَاthis
وَمَاand not
كُنَّاwe were
لَهُۥof it
مُقْرِنِينَcapable
١٣

That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say, "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it.

14
وَإِنَّآAnd indeed, we
إِلَىٰto
رَبِّنَاour Lord
لَمُنقَلِبُونَwill surely return
١٤

And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return."

15
وَجَعَلُواْBut they attribute
لَهُۥto Him
مِنْfrom
عِبَادِهِۦHis slaves
جُزْءًا‌ۚa portion
إِنَّIndeed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَman
لَكَفُورٌ مُّبِينٌsurely (is) clearly ungrateful
١٥

But they have attributed to Him from His servants a portion. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful.

16
أَمِOr
ٱتَّخَذَhas He taken
مِمَّاof what
يَخْلُقُHe has created
بَنَاتٍۢdaughters
وَأَصْفَىٰكُمand He has chosen (for) you
بِٱلْبَنِينَsons
16

Or has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons?

17
وَإِذَاAnd when
بُشِّرَis given good news
أَحَدُهُم(to) one of them
بِمَاof what
ضَرَبَhe sets up
لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِfor the Most Gracious
مَثَلًۭا(as) a likeness
ظَلَّbecomes
وَجْهُهُۥhis face
مُسْوَدًّۭاdark
وَهُوَand he
كَظِيمٌ(is) filled with grief
17

And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison [i.e., a daughter], his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.

18
أَوَمَنThen (is one) who
يُنَشَّؤُا۟is brought up
فِىin
ٱلْحِلْيَةِornaments
وَهُوَand he
فِىin
ٱلْخِصَامِthe dispute
غَيْرُ(is) not
مُبِينٍۢclear
18

So is one brought up in ornaments while being during conflict unevident [attributed to Allāh]?

19
وَجَعَلُواْAnd they made
ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَthe Angels
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
هُمْthemselves
عِبَـٰدُ(are) slaves
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ(of) the Most Gracious
إِنَـٰثًا‌ۚfemales
أَشَهِدُواْDid they witness
خَلْقَهُمْ‌ۚtheir creation
سَتُكْتَبُWill be recorded
شَهَـٰدَتُهُمْtheir testimony
وَيُسْــَٔلُونَand they will be questioned
١٩

And they described the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, as females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.

20
وَقَالُوا۟And they say
لَوْIf
شَآءَhad willed
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُthe Most Gracious
مَا عَبَدْنَـٰهُم ۗwe would not have worshipped them
مَّاNot
لَهُمthey have
بِذَٰلِكَabout that
مِنْany
عِلْمٍ ۖknowledge
إِنْNothing
هُمْthey (do)
إِلَّاbut
يَخْرُصُونَlie
20

And they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have of that no knowledge. They are not but misjudging.

21
أَمْOr
ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْhave We given them
كِتَـٰبًۭاa book
مِّن قَبْلِهِۦbefore it
فَهُمso they
بِهِۦto it
مُسْتَمْسِكُونَ(are) holding fast
21

Or have We given them a book before it [i.e., the Qur’ān] to which they are adhering?

22
بَلْNay
قَالُوٓا۟they say
إِنَّاIndeed, we
وَجَدْنَآ[we] found
ءَابَآءَنَاour forefathers
عَلَىٰٓupon
أُمَّةٍۢa religion
وَإِنَّاand indeed, we
عَلَىٰٓon
ءَاثَـٰرِهِمtheir footsteps
مُّهْتَدُونَ(are) guided
22

Rather, they say, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are in their footsteps [rightly] guided."

23
وَكَذَٰلِكَAnd thus
مَآnot
أَرْسَلْنَاWe sent
مِن قَبْلِكَbefore you
فِىin
قَرْيَةٍۢa town
مِّنany
نَّذِيرٍwarner
إِلَّاexcept
قَالَsaid
مُتْرَفُوهَآ(the) wealthy ones of it
إِنَّاIndeed, we
وَجَدْنَآ[we] found
ءَابَآءَنَاour forefathers
عَلَىٰٓon
أُمَّةٍۢa religion
وَإِنَّاand indeed, we
عَلَىٰٓ[on]
ءَاثَـٰرِهِمtheir footsteps
مُّقْتَدُونَ(are) following
23

And similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are, in their footsteps, following."

24
۞ قَـٰلَHe said
أَوَلَوْEven if
جِئْتُكُمI brought you
بِأَهْدَىٰbetter guidance
مِمَّاthan what
وَجَدتُّمْyou found
عَلَيْهِon it
ءَابَآءَكُمْ ۖyour forefathers
قَالُوٓا۟They said
إِنَّاIndeed, we
بِمَآwith what
أُرْسِلْتُمyou are sent
بِهِۦwith [it]
كَـٰفِرُونَ(are) disbelievers
24

[Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."

25
فَٱنتَقَمْنَاSo We took retribution
مِنْهُمْ‌ۖfrom them
فَٱنظُرْThen see
كَيْفَhow
كَانَwas
عَـٰقِبَةُ(the) end
ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ(of) the deniers
٢٥

So We took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers.
