Relates the story of Prophet Nuh's long struggle with his people as a mirror for the Quraysh, warning that persistent rejection of a messenger has always ended in ruin.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
إِنَّآIndeed, We
أَرْسَلْنَا[We] sent
نُوحًاNuh
إِلَىٰto
قَوْمِهِۦٓhis people
أَنْthat
أَنذِرْWarn
قَوْمَكَyour people
مِنfrom
قَبْلِbefore
أَن[that]
يَأْتِيَهُمْcomes to them
عَذَابٌa punishment
أَلِيمٌۭpainful
1

Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment."

قَالَHe said
يَـٰقَوْمِO my people
إِنِّىIndeed, I am
لَكُمْto you
نَذِيرٌۭa warner
مُّبِينٌclear
2

He said, "O my people, indeed I am to you a clear warner -

3
أَنِThat
ٱعْبُدُواْWorship
ٱللَّهَAllah
وَٱتَّقُوهُand fear Him
وَأَطِيعُونِand obey me
٣

To worship Allāh, fear Him and obey me.

4
يَغْفِرْHe will forgive
لَكُمfor you
مِّن[of]
ذُنُوبِكُمْyour sins
وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْand give you respite
إِلَىٰٓfor
أَجَلٍۢa term
مُّسَمًّى ۚspecified
إِنَّIndeed
أَجَلَ(the) term
ٱللَّهِ(of) Allah
إِذَاwhen
جَآءَit comes
لَاnot
يُؤَخَّرُ ۖis delayed
لَوْif
كُنتُمْyou
تَعْلَمُونَknow
4

He [i.e., Allāh] will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allāh, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew."

5
قَالَHe said
رَبِّMy Lord
إِنِّىIndeed, I
دَعَوْتُinvited
قَوْمِىmy people
لَيْلًۭاnight
وَنَهَارًۭاand day
5

He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day.

6
فَلَمْBut not
يَزِدْهُمْincreased them
دُعَآءِىٓmy invitation
إِلَّاexcept
فِرَارًا(in) flight
٦

But my invitation increased them not except in flight [i.e., aversion].

7
وَإِنِّىAnd indeed, I
كُلَّمَاevery time
دَعَوْتُهُمْI invited them
لِتَغْفِرَthat You may forgive
لَهُمْthem
جَعَلُوٓاْthey put
أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْtheir fingers
فِىٓin
ءَاذَانِهِمْtheir ears
وَٱسْتَغْشَوْاْand covered themselves
ثِيَابَهُمْ(with) their garments
وَأَصَرُّواْand persisted
وَٱسْتَكْبَرُواْand were arrogant
ٱسْتِكْبَارًا(with) pride
٧

And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance.

ثُمَّThen
إِنِّىindeed, I
دَعَوْتُهُمْinvited them
جِهَارًاpublicly
٨

Then I invited them publicly.

9
ثُمَّThen
إِنِّىٓindeed, I
أَعْلَنتُannounced
لَهُمْto them
وَأَسْرَرْتُand I confided
لَهُمْto them
إِسْرَارًاsecretly
٩

Then I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly

10
فَقُلْتُThen I said
ٱسْتَغْفِرُواْAsk forgiveness
رَبَّكُمْ(from) your Lord
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, He
كَانَis
غَفَّارًاOft-Forgiving
١٠

And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.

11
يُرْسِلِHe will send down
ٱلسَّمَآءَ(rain from) the sky
عَلَيْكُمupon you
مِّدْرَارًۭا(in) abundance
11

He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers

12
وَيُمْدِدْكُمAnd provide you
بِأَمْوَٰلٍۢwith wealth
وَبَنِينَand children
وَيَجْعَلand make
لَّكُمْfor you
جَنَّـٰتٍۢgardens
وَيَجْعَلand make
لَّكُمْfor you
أَنْهَـٰرًۭاrivers
12

And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.

13
مَّاWhat
لَكُمْ(is) for you
لَاnot
تَرْجُونَyou attribute
لِلَّهِto Allah
وَقَارًاgrandeur
١٣

What is [the matter] with you that you do not attribute to Allāh [due] grandeur

14
وَقَدْAnd indeed
خَلَقَكُمْHe created you
أَطْوَارًا(in) stages
١٤

While He has created you in stages?

15
أَلَمْDo not
تَرَوْا۟you see
كَيْفَhow
خَلَقَdid create
ٱللَّهُAllah
سَبْعَ(the) seven
سَمَـٰوَٰتٍۢheavens
طِبَاقًۭا(in) layers
15

Do you not consider how Allāh has created seven heavens in layers

16
وَجَعَلَAnd made
ٱلْقَمَرَthe moon
فِيهِنَّtherein
نُورًۭاa light
وَجَعَلَand made
ٱلشَّمْسَthe sun
سِرَاجًۭاa lamp
16

And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp?

17
وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah
أَنۢبَتَكُمhas caused you to grow
مِّنَfrom
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth
نَبَاتًۭا(as) a growth
17

And Allāh has caused you to grow from the earth a [progressive] growth.

18
ثُمَّThen
يُعِيدُكُمْHe will return you
فِيهَاinto it
وَيُخْرِجُكُمْand bring you forth
إِخْرَاجًا(a new) bringing forth
١٨

Then He will return you into it and extract you [another] extraction.

19
وَٱللَّهُAnd Allah
جَعَلَmade
لَكُمُfor you
ٱلْأَرْضَthe earth
بِسَاطًاan expanse
١٩

And Allāh has made for you the earth an expanse

20
لِّتَسْلُكُوا۟That you may go along
مِنْهَاtherein
سُبُلًۭا(in) paths
فِجَاجًۭاwide
20

That you may follow therein roads of passage.'"

21
قَالَSaid
نُوحٌۭNuh
رَّبِّMy Lord
إِنَّهُمْIndeed, they
عَصَوْنِىdisobeyed me
وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟and followed
مَن(the one) who
لَّمْ(did) not
يَزِدْهُincrease him
مَالُهُۥhis wealth
وَوَلَدُهُۥٓand his children
إِلَّاexcept
خَسَارًۭا(in) loss
21

Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss.

22
وَمَكَرُوا۟And they have planned
مَكْرًۭاa plan
كُبَّارًۭاgreat
22

And they conspired an immense conspiracy

23
وَقَالُوا۟And they said
لَا(Do) not
تَذَرُنَّleave
ءَالِهَتَكُمْyour gods
وَلَاand (do) not
تَذَرُنَّleave
وَدًّۭاWadd
وَلَاand not
سُوَاعًۭاSuwa
وَلَاand not
يَغُوثَYaguth
وَيَعُوقَand Yauq
وَنَسْرًۭاand Nasr
23

And said, 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwāʿ or Yaghūth and Yaʿūq and Nasr.'

24
وَقَدْAnd indeed
أَضَلُّوا۟they have led astray
كَثِيرًۭا ۖmany
وَلَاAnd not
تَزِدِincrease
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoers
إِلَّاexcept
ضَلَـٰلًۭا(in) error
24

And already they have misled many. And, [my Lord], do not increase the wrongdoers except in error."

25
مِّمَّاBecause of
خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِهِمْtheir sins
أُغْرِقُوا۟they were drowned
فَأُدْخِلُوا۟then made to enter
نَارًۭا(the) Fire
فَلَمْand not
يَجِدُوا۟they found
لَهُمfor themselves
مِّنfrom
دُونِbesides
ٱللَّهِAllah
أَنصَارًۭاany helpers
25

Because of their sins they were drowned and put into the Fire, and they found not for themselves besides Allāh [any] helpers.
