وَٱلْقُرْءَانِBy the Quran
ٱلْحَكِيمِthe Wise
٢

By the wise Qur’ān,

3
إِنَّكَIndeed, you
لَمِنَ(are) among
ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengers
٣

Indeed you, [O Muḥammad], are from among the messengers,

4
عَلَىٰOn
صِرَٰطٍۢa Path
مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢStraight
4

On a straight path.

5
تَنزِيلَA revelation
ٱلْعَزِيزِ(of) the All-Mighty
ٱلرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
٥

[This is] a revelation of the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,

6
لِتُنذِرَThat you may warn
قَوْمًۭاa people
مَّآnot
أُنذِرَwere warned
ءَابَآؤُهُمْtheir forefathers
فَهُمْso they
غَـٰفِلُونَ(are) heedless
6

That you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are unaware.

7
لَقَدْCertainly
حَقَّ(has) proved true
ٱلْقَوْلُthe word
عَلَىٰٓupon
أَكْثَرِهِمْmost of them
فَهُمْso they
لَا(do) not
يُؤْمِنُونَbelieve
٧

Already the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect upon most of them, so they do not believe.

8
إِنَّاIndeed, We
جَعَلْنَا[We] have placed
فِىٓon
أَعْنَـٰقِهِمْtheir necks
أَغْلَـٰلًۭاiron collars
فَهِىَand they
إِلَى(are up) to
ٱلْأَذْقَانِthe chins
فَهُمso they
مُّقْمَحُونَ(are with) heads raised up
8

Indeed, We have put shackles on their necks, and they are to their chins, so they are with heads [kept] aloft.

9
وَجَعَلْنَاAnd We have made
مِنۢfrom
بَيْنِbefore/between
أَيْدِيهِمْtheir hands/their front
سَدًّۭاa barrier
وَمِنْand from
خَلْفِهِمْbehind them
سَدًّۭاa barrier
فَأَغْشَيْنَـٰهُمْand We covered them
فَهُمْso they
لَا(do) not
يُبْصِرُونَsee
9

And We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see.

10
وَسَوَآءٌAnd it (is) same
عَلَيْهِمْto them
ءَأَنذَرْتَهُمْwhether you warn them
أَمْor
لَمْ(do) not
تُنذِرْهُمْwarn them
لَاnot
يُؤْمِنُونَthey will believe
١٠

And it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.

11
إِنَّمَاOnly
تُنذِرُyou (can) warn
مَنِ(him) who
ٱتَّبَعَfollows
ٱلذِّكْرَthe Reminder
وَخَشِىَand fears
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنَthe Most Gracious
بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۖin the unseen
فَبَشِّرْهُSo give him glad tidings
بِمَغْفِرَةٍۢof forgiveness
وَأَجْرٍۢand a reward
كَرِيمٍnoble
11

You can only warn one who follows the message and fears the Most Merciful unseen. So give him good tidings of forgiveness and noble reward.

12
إِنَّاIndeed, We
نَحْنُ[We]
نُحْىِ[We] give life
ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ(to) the dead
وَنَكْتُبُand We record
مَاwhat
قَدَّمُوا۟they have sent before
وَءَاثَـٰرَهُمْ ۚand their footprints
وَكُلَّand every
شَىْءٍthing
أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُWe have enumerated it
فِىٓin
إِمَامٍۢa Register
مُّبِينٍۢclear
12

Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register.

13
وَٱضْرِبْAnd set forth
لَهُمto them
مَّثَلًاan example
أَصْحَـٰبَ(of the) companions
ٱلْقَرْيَةِ(of) the city
إِذْwhen
جَآءَهَاcame to it
ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَthe Messengers
13

And present to them an example: the people of the city, when the messengers came to it -

14
إِذْWhen
أَرْسَلْنَآWe sent
إِلَيْهِمُto them
ٱثْنَيْنِtwo (Messengers)
فَكَذَّبُوهُمَاbut they denied both of them
فَعَزَّزْنَاso We strengthened them
بِثَالِثٍۢwith a third
فَقَالُوٓا۟and they said
إِنَّآIndeed, We
إِلَيْكُمto you
مُّرْسَلُونَ(are) Messengers
14

When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened [them] with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you."

15
قَالُوا۟They said
مَآNot
أَنتُمْyou
إِلَّا(are) but
بَشَرٌۭhuman beings
مِّثْلُنَاlike us
وَمَآand not
أَنزَلَhas revealed
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُthe Most Gracious
مِنany
شَىْءٍthing
إِنْNot
أَنتُمْyou
إِلَّا(are) but
تَكْذِبُونَlying
15

They said, "You are not but human beings like us, and the Most Merciful has not revealed a thing. You are only telling lies."

16
قَالُواْThey said
رَبُّنَاOur Lord
يَعْلَمُknows
إِنَّآthat we
إِلَيْكُمْto you
لَمُرْسَلُونَ(are) surely Messengers
١٦

They said, "Our Lord knows that we are messengers to you,

17
وَمَاAnd not
عَلَيْنَآ(is) on us
إِلَّاexcept
ٱلْبَلَـٰغُthe conveyance
ٱلْمُبِينُclear
١٧

And we are not responsible except for clear notification."

18
قَالُوٓا۟They said
إِنَّاIndeed, we
تَطَيَّرْنَا[we] see an evil omen
بِكُمْ ۖfrom you
لَئِنIf
لَّمْnot
تَنتَهُوا۟you desist
لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْsurely, we will stone you
وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُمand surely will touch you
مِّنَّاfrom us
عَذَابٌa punishment
أَلِيمٌۭpainful
18

They said, "Indeed, we consider you a bad omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will surely touch you, from us, a painful punishment."

19
قَالُوا۟They said
طَـٰٓئِرُكُمYour evil omen
مَّعَكُمْ ۚ(be) with you
أَئِنIs it because
ذُكِّرْتُم ۚyou are admonished
بَلْNay
أَنتُمْyou
قَوْمٌۭ(are) a people
مُّسْرِفُونَtransgressing
19

They said, "Your omen [i.e., fate] is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people."

20
وَجَآءَAnd came
مِنْfrom
أَقْصَا(the) farthest end
ٱلْمَدِينَةِ(of) the city
رَجُلٌۭa man
يَسْعَىٰrunning
قَالَHe said
يَـٰقَوْمِO my People
ٱتَّبِعُوا۟Follow
ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengers
20

And there came from the farthest end of the city a man, running. He said, "O my people, follow the messengers.

21
ٱتَّبِعُوا۟Follow
مَن(those) who
لَّا(do) not
يَسْـَٔلُكُمْask (of) you
أَجْرًۭاany payment
وَهُمand they
مُّهْتَدُونَ(are) rightly guided
21

Follow those who do not ask of you [any] payment, and they are [rightly] guided.

22
وَمَاAnd what
لِىَ(is) for me
لَآ(that) not
أَعْبُدُI worship
ٱلَّذِىthe One Who
فَطَرَنِىcreated me
وَإِلَيْهِand to Whom
تُرْجَعُونَyou will be returned
٢٢

And why should I not worship He who created me and to whom you will be returned?

23
ءَأَتَّخِذُShould I take
مِن دُونِهِۦٓbesides Him
ءَالِهَةًgods
إِنIf
يُرِدْنِintends for me
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُthe Most Gracious
بِضُرٍّۢany harm
لَّاnot
تُغْنِwill avail
عَنِّى[from] me
شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْtheir intercession
شَيْـًۭٔا(in) anything
وَلَاand not
يُنقِذُونِthey (can) save me
23

Should I take other than Him [false] deities [while], if the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor can they save me?

24
إِنِّىٓIndeed, I
إِذًۭاthen
لَّفِىsurely would be in
ضَلَـٰلٍۢan error
مُّبِينٍclear
24

Indeed, I would then be in manifest error.

25
إِنِّىٓIndeed, I
ءَامَنتُ[I] have believed
بِرَبِّكُمْin your Lord
فَٱسْمَعُونِso listen to me
٢٥

Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me."
