Al-Qamar

The Moon

القمر

Uses the splitting of the moon, a sign witnessed by the Makkans themselves, to warn the disbelievers that the approaching Hour they mocked was drawing near.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
ٱقْتَرَبَتِHas come near
ٱلسَّاعَةُthe Hour
وَٱنشَقَّand has split
ٱلْقَمَرُthe moon
١

The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].

2
وَإِنAnd if
يَرَوْا۟they see
ءَايَةًۭa Sign
يُعْرِضُوا۟they turn away
وَيَقُولُوا۟and say
سِحْرٌۭMagic
مُّسْتَمِرٌّۭcontinuing

And if they see a sign [i.e., miracle], they turn away and say, "Passing magic."

وَكَذَّبُوا۟And they denied
وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟and followed
أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚtheir desires
وَكُلُّbut (for) every
أَمْرٍۢmatter
مُّسْتَقِرٌّۭ(will be a) settlement

And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement.

4
وَلَقَدْAnd certainly
جَآءَهُم مِّنَhas come to them
ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِof
مَاthe information
فِيهِwherein
مُزْدَجَرٌ(is) deterrence
٤

And there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence.

5
حِكْمَةٌۢWisdom
بَـٰلِغَةٌۭ ۖperfect
فَمَاbut not
تُغْنِwill avail
ٱلنُّذُرُthe warnings

Extensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them].

6
فَتَوَلَّSo turn away
عَنْهُمْ ۘfrom them
يَوْمَ(The) Day
يَدْعُwill call
ٱلدَّاعِthe caller
إِلَىٰto
شَىْءٍۢa thing
نُّكُرٍterrible

So leave them, [O Muḥammad]. The Day the Caller calls to something forbidding,

7
خُشَّعًا(Will be) humbled
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْtheir eyes
يَخْرُجُونَthey will come forth
مِنَfrom
ٱلْأَجْدَاثِthe graves
كَأَنَّهُمْas if they (were)
جَرَادٌۭlocusts
مُّنتَشِرٌۭspreading

Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading,

8
مُّهْطِعِينَRacing ahead
إِلَىtowards
ٱلدَّاعِ‌ۖthe caller
يَقُولُWill say
ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَthe disbelievers
هَـٰذَاThis
يَوْمٌ(is) a Day
عَسِرٌdifficult
٨

Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day."

۞ كَذَّبَتْDenied
قَبْلَهُمْbefore them
قَوْمُ(the) people
نُوحٍۢ(of) Nuh
فَكَذَّبُوا۟and they denied
عَبْدَنَاOur slave
وَقَالُوا۟and said
مَجْنُونٌۭA madman
وَٱزْدُجِرَand he was repelled

The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.

10
فَدَعَاSo he called
رَبَّهُۥٓhis Lord
أَنِّىI am
مَغْلُوبٌۭone overpowered
فَٱنتَصِرْso help
10

So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."

11
فَفَتَحْنَآSo We opened
أَبْوَٰبَ(the) gates
ٱلسَّمَآءِ(of) heaven
بِمَآءٍۢwith water
مُّنْهَمِرٍۢpouring down
11

Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down

12
وَفَجَّرْنَاAnd We caused to burst
ٱلْأَرْضَthe earth
عُيُونًۭا(with) springs
فَٱلْتَقَىso met
ٱلْمَآءُthe water(s)
عَلَىٰٓfor
أَمْرٍۢa matter
قَدْalready
قُدِرَpredestined
12

And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.

13
وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُAnd We carried him
عَلَىٰon
ذَاتِ(ark) made of planks
أَلْوَٲحٍ وَدُسُرٍand nails
١٣

And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails,

14
تَجْرِىSailing
بِأَعْيُنِنَاbefore Our eyes
جَزَآءًۭa reward
لِّمَنfor (he) who
كَانَwas
كُفِرَdenied
14

Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.

15
وَلَقَدAnd certainly
تَّرَكْنَـٰهَآWe left it
ءَايَةًۭ(as) a Sign
فَهَلْso is (there)
مِنany
مُّدَّكِرٍۢwho will receive admonition
15

And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?

16
فَكَيْفَSo how
كَانَwas
عَذَابِىMy punishment
وَنُذُرِand My warnings
١٦

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

17
وَلَقَدْAnd certainly
يَسَّرْنَاWe have made easy
ٱلْقُرْءَانَthe Quran
لِلذِّكْرِfor remembrance
فَهَلْso is (there)
مِنany
مُّدَّكِرٍۢwho will receive admonition
17

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

18
كَذَّبَتْDenied
عَادٌۭAad
فَكَيْفَso how
كَانَwas
عَذَابِىMy punishment
وَنُذُرِand My warnings
18

ʿAad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

19
إِنَّآIndeed, We
أَرْسَلْنَا[We] sent
عَلَيْهِمْupon them
رِيحًۭاa wind
صَرْصَرًۭاfurious
فِىon
يَوْمِa day
نَحْسٍۢ(of) misfortune
مُّسْتَمِرٍّۢcontinuous
19

Indeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune,

20
تَنزِعُPlucking out
ٱلنَّاسَmen
كَأَنَّهُمْas if they (were)
أَعْجَازُtrunks
نَخْلٍۢ(of) date-palms
مُّنقَعِرٍۢuprooted

Extracting the people as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted.

21
فَكَيْفَSo how
كَانَwas
عَذَابِىMy punishment
وَنُذُرِand My warnings
٢١

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

22
وَلَقَدْAnd certainly
يَسَّرْنَاWe have made easy
ٱلْقُرْءَانَthe Quran
لِلذِّكْرِfor remembrance
فَهَلْso is (there)
مِنany
مُّدَّكِرٍۢwho will receive admonition
22

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

23
كَذَّبَتْDenied
ثَمُودُThamud
بِٱلنُّذُرِthe warnings
٢٣

Thamūd denied the warning.

24
فَقَالُوٓا۟And said
أَبَشَرًۭاIs (it) a human being
مِّنَّاamong us
وَٰحِدًۭاone
نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ(that) we should follow him
إِنَّآIndeed, we
إِذًۭاthen
لَّفِى(will be) surely in
ضَلَـٰلٍۢerror
وَسُعُرٍand madness
24

And said, "Is it one human being among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness.

25
أَءُلْقِىَHas been sent
ٱلذِّكْرُthe Reminder
عَلَيْهِto him
مِنۢfrom
بَيْنِنَاamong us
بَلْNay
هُوَhe
كَذَّابٌ(is) a liar
أَشِرٌۭinsolent
25

Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."
