Surah 7 · Makki · 206 Ayahs

Al-A'raf

The Heights

الأعراف

Invites the people to the divine message with warning, tracing the stories of earlier prophets and their rejecting nations as a mirror for the Makkans, showing that persistent rejection of a Messenger has always led to ruin.

بِهِۦwith it
وَذِكْرَىٰand a reminder
لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَfor the believers
2

[This is] a Book revealed to you, [O Muḥammad] - so let there not be in your breast distress therefrom - that you may warn thereby and as a reminder to the believers.

3
ٱتَّبِعُوا۟Follow
مَآwhat
أُنزِلَhas been revealed
إِلَيْكُمto you
مِّنfrom
رَّبِّكُمْyour Lord

مَّا(is) what
تَذَكَّرُونَyou remember
3

Follow, [O mankind], what has been revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow other than Him any allies. Little do you remember.

4
وَكَمAnd how many
مِّنof
قَرْيَةٍa city
أَهْلَكْنَـٰهَاWe destroyed it
فَجَآءَهَاand came to it
بَأْسُنَاOur punishment
بَيَـٰتًا(at) night
أَوْor
هُمْ(while) they
قَآئِلُونَwere sleeping at noon
4

And how many cities have We destroyed, and Our punishment came to them at night or while they were sleeping at noon.

5
فَمَاThen not
كَانَwas
دَعْوَىٰهُمْtheir plea
إِذْwhen
جَآءَهُمcame to them
بَأْسُنَآOur punishment
إِلَّآexcept
أَنthat
قَالُوٓا۟they said
إِنَّاIndeed, we
كُنَّاwere
ظَـٰلِمِينَwrongdoers
5

And their declaration when Our punishment came to them was only that they said, "Indeed, we were wrongdoers!"

6
فَلَنَسْــَٔلَنَّThen surely We will question
ٱلَّذِينَthose (to) whom
أُرْسِلَwere sent
إِلَيْهِمْto them (Messengers)
وَلَنَسْــَٔلَنَّand surely We will question
ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَthe Messengers
٦

Then We will surely question those to whom [a message] was sent, and We will surely question the messengers.

7
فَلَنَقُصَّنَّThen surely We will narrate
عَلَيْهِمto them
بِعِلْمٍۢ ۖwith knowledge
وَمَاand not
كُنَّاwere We
غَآئِبِينَabsent
7

Then We will surely relate [their deeds] to them with knowledge, and We were not [at all] absent.

8
وَٱلْوَزْنُAnd the weighing
يَوْمَئِذٍthat day
ٱلْحَقُّ ۚ(will be) the truth
فَمَنSo whose
ثَقُلَتْ(will be) heavy
مَوَٰزِينُهُۥhis scales
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَthen those
هُمُ[they]
ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ(will be) the successful ones
8

And the weighing [of deeds] that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy - it is they who will be the successful.

9
وَمَنْAnd (for) those
خَفَّتْ(will be) light
مَوَٰزِينُهُۥhis scales
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَso those
ٱلَّذِينَ(will be) the ones who
خَسِرُوٓا۟lost
أَنفُسَهُمthemselves
بِمَاbecause
كَانُوا۟they were
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاto Our Verses
يَظْلِمُونَ(doing) injustice
9

And those whose scales are light - they are the ones who will lose themselves for what injustice they were doing toward Our verses.

10
وَلَقَدْAnd certainly
مَكَّنَّـٰكُمْWe established you
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth
وَجَعَلْنَاand We made
لَكُمْfor you
فِيهَاin it
مَعَـٰيِشَ ۗlivelihood
قَلِيلًۭاLittle
مَّا(is) what
تَشْكُرُونَyou (are) grateful
10

And We have certainly established you upon the earth and made for you therein ways of livelihood. Little are you grateful.

11
وَلَقَدْAnd certainly
خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْWe created you
ثُمَّthen
صَوَّرْنَـٰكُمْWe fashioned you
ثُمَّThen
قُلْنَاWe said
لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِto the Angels
ٱسْجُدُوا۟Prostrate
لِـَٔادَمَto Adam
فَسَجَدُوٓا۟So they prostrated
إِلَّآexcept
إِبْلِيسَIblis
لَمْNot
يَكُنhe was
مِّنَof
ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَthose who prostrated
11

And We have certainly created you, [O mankind], and given you [human] form. Then We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was not of those who prostrated.

12
قَالَ(Allah) said
مَاWhat
مَنَعَكَprevented you
أَلَّاthat not
تَسْجُدَyou prostrate
إِذْwhen
أَمَرْتُكَ ۖI commanded you
قَالَ(Shaitaan) said
أَنَا۠I am
خَيْرٌۭbetter
مِّنْهُthan him
خَلَقْتَنِىYou created me
مِنfrom
نَّارٍۢfire
وَخَلَقْتَهُۥand You created him
مِنfrom
طِينٍۢclay
12

[Allāh] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay [i.e., earth]."

13
قَالَ(Allah) said
فَٱهْبِطْThen go down
مِنْهَاfrom it
فَمَاfor not
يَكُونُit is
لَكَfor you
أَنthat
تَتَكَبَّرَyou be arrogant
فِيهَاin it
فَٱخْرُجْSo get out
إِنَّكَindeed, you
مِنَ(are) of
ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَthe disgraced ones
13

[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise], for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased."

14
قَالَ(Shaitaan) said
أَنظِرْنِىٓGive me respite
إِلَىٰtill
يَوْمِ(the) Day
يُبْعَثُونَthey are raised up
١٤

[Satan] said, "Reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

15
قَالَ(Allah) said
إِنَّكَIndeed, you
مِنَ(are) of
ٱلْمُنظَرِينَthe ones given respite
١٥

[Allāh] said, "Indeed, you are of those reprieved."

16
قَالَ(Shaitaan) said
فَبِمَآBecause
أَغْوَيْتَنِىYou have sent me astray
لَأَقْعُدَنَّsurely I will sit
لَهُمْfor them
صِرَٲطَكَ(on) Your path
ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَthe straight
١٦

[Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them [i.e., mankind] on Your straight path.

17
ثُمَّThen
لَـَٔاتِيَنَّهُمsurely, I will come to them
مِّنۢfrom
بَيْنِbefore
أَيْدِيهِمْthem
وَمِنْand from
خَلْفِهِمْbehind them
وَعَنْand from
أَيْمَـٰنِهِمْtheir right
وَعَنand from
شَمَآئِلِهِمْ ۖtheir left
وَلَاand not
تَجِدُYou (will) find
أَكْثَرَهُمْmost of them
شَـٰكِرِينَgrateful
17

Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You]."

18
قَالَ(Allah) said
ٱخْرُجْGet out
مِنْهَاof it
مَذْءُومًۭاdisgraced
مَّدْحُورًۭا ۖand expelled
لَّمَنCertainly, whoever
تَبِعَكَfollows you
مِنْهُمْamong them
لَأَمْلَأَنَّsurely, I will fill
جَهَنَّمَHell
مِنكُمْwith you
أَجْمَعِينَall
18

[Allāh] said, "Depart from it [i.e., Paradise], reproached and expelled. Whoever follows you among them - I will surely fill Hell with you, all together."

19
وَيَـٰٓــَٔـادَمُAnd O Adam
ٱسْكُنْDwell
أَنتَyou
وَزَوْجُكَand your wife
ٱلْجَنَّةَ(in) the Garden
فَكُلَاand you both eat
مِنْfrom
حَيْثُwherever
شِئْتُمَاyou both wish
وَلَاbut (do) not
تَقْرَبَاapproach [both of you]
هَـٰذِهِthis
ٱلشَّجَرَةَ[the] tree
فَتَكُونَاlest you both be
مِنَamong
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَthe wrongdoers
١٩

And "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."

20
فَوَسْوَسَThen whispered
لَهُمَاto both of them
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُthe Shaitaan
لِيُبْدِىَto make apparent
لَهُمَاto both of them
مَاwhat
وُۥرِىَwas concealed
عَنْهُمَاfrom both of them
مِنof
سَوْءَٰتِهِمَاtheir shame
وَقَالَAnd he said
مَا(Did) not
نَهَىٰكُمَاforbid you both
رَبُّكُمَاyour Lord
عَنْfrom
هَـٰذِهِthis
ٱلشَّجَرَةِ[the] tree
إِلَّآexcept
أَنthat
تَكُونَاyou two become
مَلَكَيْنِAngels
أَوْor
تَكُونَاyou two become
مِنَof
ٱلْخَـٰلِدِينَthe immortals
20

But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal."

21
وَقَاسَمَهُمَآAnd he swore (to) both of them
إِنِّىIndeed, I am
لَكُمَاto both of you
لَمِنَamong
ٱلنَّـٰصِحِينَthe sincere advisors
٢١

And he swore [by Allāh] to them, "Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors."

22
فَدَلَّىٰهُمَاSo he made both of them fall
بِغُرُورٍۢ ۚby deception
فَلَمَّاThen when
ذَاقَاthey both tasted
ٱلشَّجَرَةَthe tree
بَدَتْbecame apparent
لَهُمَاto both of them
سَوْءَٰتُهُمَاtheir shame
وَطَفِقَاand they began
يَخْصِفَانِ(to) fasten
عَلَيْهِمَاover themselves
مِنfrom
وَرَقِ(the) leaves
ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ(of) the Garden
وَنَادَىٰهُمَاAnd called them both
رَبُّهُمَآtheir Lord
أَلَمْDid not
أَنْهَكُمَاI forbid you both
عَنfrom
تِلْكُمَاthis
ٱلشَّجَرَةِ[the] tree
وَأَقُلand [I] say
لَّكُمَآto both of you
إِنَّthat
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ[the] Shaitaan
لَكُمَاto both of you
عَدُوٌّۭ(is) an enemy
مُّبِينٌۭopen
22

So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, "Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?"

23
قَالَاBoth of them said
رَبَّنَاOur Lord
ظَلَمْنَآwe have wronged
أَنفُسَنَاourselves
وَإِنand if
لَّمْnot
تَغْفِرْYou forgive
لَنَا[for] us
وَتَرْحَمْنَاand have mercy (on) us
لَنَكُونَنَّsurely, we will be
مِنَamong
ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَthe losers
23

They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

24
قَالَ(Allah) said
ٱهْبِطُوا۟Get down
بَعْضُكُمْsome of you
لِبَعْضٍto some others
عَدُوٌّۭ ۖ(as) enemy
وَلَكُمْAnd for you
فِىin
ٱلْأَرْضِthe earth
مُسْتَقَرٌّۭ(is) a dwelling place
وَمَتَـٰعٌand livelihood
إِلَىٰfor
حِينٍۢa time
24

[Allāh] said, "Descend, being to one another enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment [i.e., provision] for a time."

25
قَالَHe said
فِيهَاIn it
تَحْيَوْنَyou will live
وَفِيهَاand in it
تَمُوتُونَyou will die
وَمِنْهَاand from it
تُخْرَجُونَyou will be brought forth
٢٥

He said, "Therein you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be brought forth."
