Al-Muddaththir

The Cloaked One

المدثر

Continues from the earliest revelations, commanding the Prophet to rise and warn his people, marking the true beginning of his public mission.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاO you
ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُwho covers himself
١

O you who covers himself [with a garment],

2
قُمْStand up
فَأَنذِرْand warn
٢

Arise and warn.

3
وَرَبَّكَAnd your Lord
فَكَبِّرْmagnify
٣

And your Lord glorify.

4
وَثِيَابَكَAnd your clothing
فَطَهِّرْpurify
٤

And your clothing purify.

5
وَٱلرُّجْزَAnd uncleanliness
فَٱهْجُرْavoid
٥

And uncleanliness avoid.

وَلَاAnd (do) not
تَمْنُنconfer favor
تَسْتَكْثِرُ(to) acquire more

And do not confer favor to acquire more.

7
وَلِرَبِّكَAnd for your Lord
فَٱصْبِرْbe patient
٧

But for your Lord be patient.

8
فَإِذَاThen when
نُقِرَis blown
فِىin
ٱلنَّاقُورِthe trumpet
٨

And when the trumpet is blown,

9
فَذَٰلِكَThat
يَوْمَئِذٍۢDay
يَوْمٌ(will be) a Day
عَسِيرٌdifficult

That Day will be a difficult day

10
عَلَىFor
ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَthe disbelievers
غَيْرُnot
يَسِيرٍeasy
١٠

For the disbelievers - not easy.

11
ذَرْنِىLeave Me
وَمَنْand whom
خَلَقْتُI created
وَحِيدًاalone
١١

Leave Me with the one I created alone

12
وَجَعَلْتُAnd I granted
لَهُۥto him
مَالًۭاwealth
مَّمْدُودًۭاextensive
12

And to whom I granted extensive wealth

13
وَبَنِينَAnd children
شُهُودًاpresent
١٣

And children present [with him]

14
وَمَهَّدتُّAnd I spread
لَهُۥfor him
تَمْهِيدًاease
١٤

And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].

15
ثُمَّThen
يَطْمَعُhe desires
أَنْthat
أَزِيدَI (should) add more
١٥

Then he desires that I should add more.

16
كَلَّآ‌ۖBy no means
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, he
كَانَhas been
لِأَيَـٰتِنَاto Our Verses
عَنِيدًاstubborn
١٦

No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.

17
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥSoon I will cover Him
صَعُودًا(with) a laborious punishment
١٧

I will cover him with arduous torment.

18
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, he
فَكَّرَthought
وَقَدَّرَand plotted
١٨

Indeed, he thought and deliberated.

19
فَقُتِلَSo may he be destroyed
كَيْفَhow
قَدَّرَhe plotted
١٩

So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

ثُمَّThen
قُتِلَmay he be destroyed
كَيْفَhow
قَدَّرَhe plotted
٢٠

Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

21
ثُمَّThen
نَظَرَhe looked
٢١

Then he considered [again];

22
ثُمَّThen
عَبَسَhe frowned
وَبَسَرَand scowled
٢٢

Then he frowned and scowled;

23
ثُمَّThen
أَدْبَرَhe turned back
وَٱسْتَكْبَرَand was proud
٢٣

Then he turned back and was arrogant

24
فَقَالَThen he said
إِنْNot
هَـٰذَآ(is) this
إِلَّاbut
سِحْرٌۭmagic
يُؤْثَرُimitated
24

And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

25
إِنْNot
هَـٰذَآ(is) this
إِلَّاbut
قَوْلُ(the) word
ٱلْبَشَرِ(of) a human being
٢٥

This is not but the word of a human being."
