The Resurrection

القيامة

Affirms the reality of the Resurrection in vivid, forceful terms, addressing the disbelievers' persistent doubts about being raised after death.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

لَآNay
أُقْسِمُI swear
بِيَوْمِby (the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrection
١

I swear by the Day of Resurrection

2
وَلَآAnd nay
أُقْسِمُI swear
بِٱلنَّفْسِby the soul
ٱللَّوَّامَةِself-accusing
٢

And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].

أَيَحْسَبُDoes think
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ[the] man
أَلَّنthat not
نَّجْمَعَWe will assemble
عِظَامَهُۥhis bones
3

Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?

4
بَلَىٰNay
قَـٰدِرِينَ(We are) Able
عَلَىٰٓon
أَنthat
نُّسَوِّىَWe can restore
بَنَانَهُۥhis fingertips
4

Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.

5
بَلْNay
يُرِيدُDesires
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ[the] man
لِيَفْجُرَto give (the) lie
أَمَامَهُۥ(to) what is before him
٥

But man desires to continue in sin.

6
يَسْــَٔلُHe asks
أَيَّانَWhen
يَوْمُ(is the) Day
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ(of) the Resurrection
٦

He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"

7
فَإِذَاSo when
بَرِقَis dazzled
ٱلْبَصَرُthe vision
٧

So when vision is dazzled.

8
وَخَسَفَAnd becomes dark
ٱلْقَمَرُthe moon
٨

And the moon darkens.

9
وَجُمِعَAnd are joined
ٱلشَّمْسُthe sun
وَٱلْقَمَرُand the moon
٩

And the sun and the moon are joined,

10
يَقُولُWill say
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ[the] man
يَوْمَئِذٍthat Day
أَيْنَWhere
ٱلْمَفَرُّ(is) the escape
١٠

Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"

11
كَلَّاBy no means
لَا(There is) no
وَزَرَrefuge
١١

No! There is no refuge.

12
إِلَىٰTo
رَبِّكَyour Lord
يَوْمَئِذٍthat Day
ٱلْمُسْتَقَرُّ(is) the place of rest
١٢

To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.

13
يُنَبَّؤُا۟Will be informed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ[the] man
يَوْمَئِذٍۭthat Day
بِمَاof what
قَدَّمَhe sent forth
وَأَخَّرَand kept back
13

Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back.

14
بَلِNay
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ[The] man
عَلَىٰagainst
نَفْسِهِۦhimself
بَصِيرَةٌ(will be) a witness
١٤

Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness,

15
وَلَوْEven if
أَلْقَىٰhe presents
مَعَاذِيرَهُۥhis excuses
١٥

Even if he presents his excuses.

16
لَاNot
تُحَرِّكْmove
بِهِۦwith it
لِسَانَكَyour tongue
لِتَعْجَلَto hasten
بِهِۦٓwith it
١٦

Move not your tongue with it, [O Muḥammad], to hasten with it [i.e., recitation of the Qur’ān].

17
إِنَّIndeed
عَلَيْنَاupon Us
جَمْعَهُۥ(is) its collection
وَقُرْءَانَهُۥand its recitation
١٧

Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.

18
فَإِذَاAnd when
قَرَأْنَـٰهُWe have recited it
فَٱتَّبِعْthen follow
قُرْءَانَهُۥits recitation
١٨

So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.

19
ثُمَّThen
إِنَّindeed
عَلَيْنَاupon Us
بَيَانَهُۥ(is) its explanation
١٩

Then upon Us is its clarification [to you].

20
كَلَّاNo
بَلْBut
تُحِبُّونَyou love
ٱلْعَاجِلَةَthe immediate
٢٠

No! But you [i.e., mankind] love the immediate

21
وَتَذَرُونَAnd leave
ٱلْأَخِرَةَthe Hereafter
٢١

And leave [i.e., neglect] the Hereafter.

22
وُجُوهٌۭFaces
يَوْمَئِذٍۢthat Day
نَّاضِرَةٌ(will be) radiant
22

[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,

23
إِلَىٰTowards
رَبِّهَاtheir Lord
نَاظِرَةٌlooking
٢٣

Looking at their Lord.

24
وَوُجُوهٌۭAnd faces
يَوْمَئِذٍۭthat Day
بَاسِرَةٌۭ(will be) distorted
24

And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,

25
تَظُنُّThinking
أَنthat
يُفْعَلَwill be done
بِهَاto them
فَاقِرَةٌۭbackbreaking
25

Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.
