The Overthrowing

التكوير

Describes in two stages the cosmic upheaval of the Hour and the subsequent judgment of souls, affirming both the Hereafter and the genuineness of the Prophet's revelation.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
إِذَاWhen
ٱلشَّمْسُthe sun
كُوِّرَتْis wrapped up
١

When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

2
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلنُّجُومُthe stars
ٱنكَدَرَتْfall, losing their luster
٢

And when the stars fall, dispersing,

3
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلْجِبَالُthe mountains
سُيِّرَتْare moved away
٣

And when the mountains are removed

4
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلْعِشَارُthe full-term she-camels
عُطِّلَتْ(are) left untended
٤

And when full-term she-camels are neglected

5
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلْوُحُوشُthe wild beasts
حُشِرَتْare gathered
٥

And when the wild beasts are gathered

6
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلْبِحَارُthe seas
سُجِّرَتْare made to overflow
٦

And when the seas are filled with flame

7
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلنُّفُوسُthe souls
زُوِّجَتْare paired
٧

And when the souls are paired

8
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُthe female infant buried alive
سُئِلَتْis asked
٨

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

9
بِأَىِّFor what
ذَنۢبٍۢsin
قُتِلَتْshe was killed
9

For what sin she was killed

10
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلصُّحُفُthe pages
نُشِرَتْare laid open
١٠

And when the pages are spread [i.e., made public]

11
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلسَّمَآءُthe sky
كُشِطَتْis stripped away
١١

And when the sky is stripped away

12
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلْجَحِيمُthe Hellfire
سُعِّرَتْis set ablaze
١٢

And when Hellfire is set ablaze

13
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلْجَنَّةُParadise
أُزْلِفَتْis brought near
١٣

And when Paradise is brought near,

14
عَلِمَتْWill know
نَفْسٌۭa soul
مَّآwhat
أَحْضَرَتْit has brought
14

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].

15
فَلَآBut nay
أُقْسِمُI swear
بِٱلْخُنَّسِby the retreating planets
١٥

So I swear by the retreating stars -

16
ٱلْجَوَارِThose that run
ٱلْكُنَّسِ(and) disappear
١٦

Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]

17
وَٱلَّيْلِAnd the night
إِذَاwhen
عَسْعَسَit departs
١٧

And by the night as it closes in

18
وَٱلصُّبْحِAnd the dawn
إِذَاwhen
تَنَفَّسَit breathes
١٨

And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]

19
إِنَّهُۥIndeed, it
لَقَوْلُ(is) surely a word
رَسُولٍۢ(of) a Messenger
كَرِيمٍۢnoble

[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]

20
ذِىPossessor of
قُوَّةٍpower
عِندَwith
ذِى(the) Owner of
ٱلْعَرْشِthe Throne
مَكِينٍsecure
٢٠

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],

21
مُّطَاعٍۢOne to be obeyed
ثَمَّand
أَمِينٍۢtrustworthy
21

Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.

22
وَمَاAnd not
صَاحِبُكُم(is) your companion
بِمَجْنُونٍۢmad
22

And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.

23
وَلَقَدْAnd certainly
رَءَاهُhe saw him
بِٱلْأُفُقِin the horizon
ٱلْمُبِينِthe clear
٢٣

And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.

24
وَمَاAnd not
هُوَhe (is)
عَلَىon
ٱلْغَيْبِthe unseen
بِضَنِينٍa withholder
٢٤

And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.

25
وَمَاAnd not
هُوَit
بِقَوْلِ(is the) word
شَيْطَـٰنٍۢ(of) Shaitaan
رَّجِيمٍۢaccursed

And it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].
