البلد

Compresses a complete outlook on life into a few brief verses, showing that Allah has shown man both the path of good and the path of evil and given him the means to choose.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

لَآNay
أُقْسِمُI swear
بِهَـٰذَاby this
ٱلْبَلَدِcity
١

I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]

2
وَأَنتَAnd you
حِلٌّۢ(are) free (to dwell)
بِهَـٰذَاin this
ٱلْبَلَدِcity
2

And you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city

3
وَوَالِدٍۢAnd the begetter
وَمَاand what
وَلَدَhe begot
3

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

4
لَقَدْCertainly
خَلَقْنَاWe have created
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَman
فِى(to be) in
كَبَدٍhardship
٤

We have certainly created man into hardship.

5
أَيَحْسَبُDoes he think
أَنthat
لَّنnot
يَقْدِرَhas power
عَلَيْهِover him
أَحَدٌۭanyone
5

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?

6
يَقُولُHe will say
أَهْلَكْتُI have squandered
مَالًۭاwealth
لُّبَدًاabundant
6

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

7
أَيَحْسَبُDoes he think
أَنthat
لَّمْnot
يَرَهُۥٓsees him
أَحَدٌanyone
7

Does he think that no one has seen him?

8
أَلَمْHave not
نَجْعَلWe made
لَّهُۥfor him
عَيْنَيْنِtwo eyes
٨

Have We not made for him two eyes?

9
وَلِسَانًۭاAnd a tongue
وَشَفَتَيْنِand two lips
9

And a tongue and two lips?

10
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُAnd shown him
ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِthe two ways
١٠

And have shown him the two ways?

11
فَلَاBut not
ٱقْتَحَمَhe has attempted
ٱلْعَقَبَةَthe steep path
١١

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.

12
وَمَآAnd what
أَدْرَٮٰكَcan make you know
مَاwhat
ٱلْعَقَبَةُthe steep path (is)
١٢

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?

13
فَكُّ(It is) freeing
رَقَبَةٍa neck
١٣

It is the freeing of a slave

14
أَوْOr
إِطْعَـٰمٌۭfeeding
فِىin
يَوْمٍۢa day
ذِىof
مَسْغَبَةٍۢsevere hunger
14

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

15
يَتِيمًۭاAn orphan
ذَاof
مَقْرَبَةٍnear relationship
15

An orphan of near relationship

16
أَوْOr
مِسْكِينًۭاa needy person
ذَاin
مَتْرَبَةٍۢmisery
16

Or a needy person in misery

17
ثُمَّThen
كَانَhe is
مِنَof
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ءَامَنُواْbelieve
وَتَوَاصَوْاْand enjoin (each other)
بِٱلصَّبْرِto patience
وَتَوَاصَوْاْand enjoin (each other)
بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِto compassion
١٧

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.

18
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَThose
أَصْحَـٰبُ(are the) companions
ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ(of) the right (hand)
١٨

Those are the companions of the right.

19
وَٱلَّذِينَBut those who
كَفَرُواْdisbelieve
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِنَاin Our Verses
هُمْthey
أَصْحَـٰبُ(are the) companions
ٱلْمَشْــَٔمَةِ(of) the left (hand)
١٩

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.

20
عَلَيْهِمْOver them
نَارٌۭ(will be the) Fire
مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢclosed in
20

Over them will be fire closed in.
