العلق

Contains the earliest verses revealed to the Prophet, commanding him to read in the name of his Lord, and recounts the moment Abu Jahl tried to stop him from praying at the Kaabah.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

ٱقْرَأْRead
بِٱسْمِin (the) name
رَبِّكَ(of) your Lord
ٱلَّذِىthe One Who
خَلَقَcreated
١

Recite in the name of your Lord who created

2
خَلَقَHe created
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَman
مِنْfrom
عَلَقٍa clinging substance
٢

Created man from a clinging substance.

3
ٱقْرَأْRead
وَرَبُّكَand your Lord
ٱلْأَكْرَمُ(is) the Most Generous
٣

Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

4
ٱلَّذِىThe One Who
عَلَّمَtaught
بِٱلْقَلَمِby the pen
٤

Who taught by the pen

5
عَلَّمَTaught
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَman
مَاwhat
لَمْnot
يَعْلَمْhe knew
٥

Taught man that which he knew not.

6
كَلَّآNay
إِنَّIndeed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَman
لَيَطْغَىٰٓsurely transgresses
٦

No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

7
أَنThat
رَّءَاهُhe sees himself
ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓself-sufficient
7

Because he sees himself self-sufficient.

8
إِنَّIndeed
إِلَىٰto
رَبِّكَyour Lord
ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ(is) the return
٨

Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

9
أَرَءَيْتَHave you seen
ٱلَّذِىthe one who
يَنْهَىٰforbids
٩

Have you seen the one who forbids

10
عَبْدًاA slave
إِذَاwhen
صَلَّىٰٓhe prays
١٠

A servant when he prays?

11
أَرَءَيْتَHave you seen
إِنif
كَانَhe is
عَلَىupon
ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ[the] guidance
11

Have you seen if he is upon guidance

12
أَوْOr
أَمَرَhe enjoins
بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ[of the] righteousness
١٢

Or enjoins righteousness?

13
أَرَءَيْتَHave you seen
إِنif
كَذَّبَhe denies
وَتَوَلَّىٰٓand turns away
13

Have you seen if he denies and turns away -

14
أَلَمْDoes not
يَعْلَمhe know
بِأَنَّthat
ٱللَّهَAllah
يَرَىٰsees
14

Does he not know that Allāh sees?

15
كَلَّاNay
لَئِنIf
لَّمْnot
يَنتَهِhe desists
لَنَسْفَعًۢاsurely We will drag him
بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِby the forelock
15

No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock

16
نَاصِيَةٍۢA forelock
كَـٰذِبَةٍlying
خَاطِئَةٍۢsinful
16

A lying, sinning forelock.

17
فَلْيَدْعُThen let him call
نَادِيَهُۥhis associates
١٧

Then let him call his associates;

18
سَنَدْعُWe will call
ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَthe Angels of Hell
١٨

We will call the angels of Hell.

19
كَلَّاNay
لَا(Do) not
تُطِعْهُobey him
وَٱسْجُدْBut prostrate
وَٱقْتَرِب ۩and draw near (to Allah)
19

No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].
